What's your favorite pre British invasion musician/band?

I imagine there must have been some. But I was only around ten years old, so I only have first hand recollections of what was on the radio at the time. Later on, I started paying attention to things and reading music history articles, and going out of my way to learn things. Sadly, the names of...

What's your favorite pre British invasion musician/band?

If you read histories of American rock bands that started getting record contracts and hit records after the British Invasion, you'll see many of the bands were struggling in obscurity before the British Invasion made the self-contained band a big deal again. They would either change their...

What's your favorite pre British invasion musician/band?

There were almost no bands, as we know them today, making hit records in the dark ages between the end of doo-wop and the British Invasion. That was the era of solo artists backed by session players, or "groups" that were all vocals. I liked some of the stuff by people like Del Shannon, Bobby...

What's your favorite pre British invasion musician/band?

The main thing about that era was that since studio time was so expensive, almost all records had instrumental tracks laid down by professional session players. The actual position players in the band only "covered" their own songs on tour. That's why George Martin brought in a session drummer...

    Covers, uncovers, remakes, etc.

One of the best blues bands ever, before they turned into a pop act with David Clayton Thomas replacing Al Kooper. Not a technically great recording, but it features one of the main psychedelic keyboard players from the 60's. Studio Live

What is behind the disdain some Rock critics feel towards the Doobie Brothers?

I will try, so long as you accept the fact that I am explaining why people other than me have different opinions than I have myself. I like the Doobie Brothers, but I am trying to explain why other people do not, since that is what you asked. Some critics regard the Doobie Brothers' music as...

Well, yes and no. Devo's music is SUPPOSED to suck. That was the whole point of Devo. So, when they set out to do something that sucks, and they succeed at sucking, then do they really suck?

    Covers, uncovers, remakes, etc.

The original, studio version, Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore wrote it and played guitar. Ian Gillian's voice should be registered as a weapon. Cover by Blackmore's Night, against with Ritchie Blackmore. An unbelievable cover.

What's the latest songs you've been playing on your guitar?

Not counting the new songs I have to learn for every Sunday, I've been working on some songs that lend themselves to doing as a troubadour, in other words, one singer with a guitar. Songs that really require an entire band to sound right require a band to sound right. I rehearse such songs when...

Should AC/DC record an album with Axl Rose?

I don't much care if they do or not, nor do I care if they release under the name AC/DC or something else. Axl Rose's voice sounds, to me, like fingernails on a blackboard. And while Angus Young is very, very good, very little he's recorded really impressed me all that much. His technical skills...

Tribute to the 28 Musicians That Died in 2017

That's because in Europe they use the Airbus, not the Boeing. Real Rock isn't about mainstream financial success and excess. Real rock is about THE MUSIC.

Tribute to the 28 Musicians That Died in 2017

As an old Dude myself, it saddens me to see people my age dying. But, I take comfort in a new generation of hard rocking musicians that still play rock, even if they can't get airplay on the radio. Had Grace Potter been born in 1945, she'd have been right up there with Grace Slick and Janis...

    Guitar players?

Grasshopper, you must first walk with grace before learning to run. The complex task is best learned by dividing it into smaller pieces. Learn first to play the guitar without singing. Learn to sing without playing the guitar. When you have mastered guitar, and also mastered singing, then...

My Vox amp bit the dust, so I now have a Line 6 IV 30. It's good, but not great. Adequate for my purposes.

Mike Bloomfield & the Electric Flag

If you read up on Super Session, Bloomfield recorded side one, and was too strung out on heroin to show to record side two. Kooper called in Stills at the last minute to finish the record. Think about it. That's one of the best albums of the era, and was recorded in two days, with one side all a...

    Gibson files for bankruptcy

So far it seems like nothing has happened, aside from a lot of speculation. My gut feeling is that after they find buyers for the electronic brands, that won't be enough. They'll end up selling Epiphone. Epi will continue selling most of the Gibson clones, at least for a while. Over time...

    Covers, uncovers, remakes, etc.

Here's another pop soft-rock piece by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood. It was actually their only big hit recording. And here's one of the most over-the-top psychedelic rock versions of it, made by the undisputed kings of turning syrupy pop songs into proto-heavy metal. And then there's this...

What Did You Listen To In The 80's?

Well, Duh! Why else would be both be participating in Classic Rock Forums? I didn't start this thread about music of the 80's. My tagline reveals my basic stance on genres and eras of music. My only point in this entire thread was kvetching about how dismally bad terrestrial radio was in the...

What Did You Listen To In The 80's?

I'm fine. I find that I like a lot of the music of the 1980's, even though I didn't hear it in the 1980's. I find myself stumbling across songs from the 80's on YouTube, and have to ask myself, "Why didn't any of the radio stations in the city I lived in ever play this stuff?"

What Did You Listen To In The 80's?

That's not really a unique ability. Somewhat rare, perhaps. I can also do it. I've known several others as well. But, it does provide little that you can list in a thread called, "What did you listen to in the 80's", does it? Once you've said, "The voices in my head", what else is there to say? :hm:
