I agree, although Van Halen did much the same with Your Really Got Me!
I've never considered Wild Thing a "novelty" song. To me it's more of a one hit wonder, like Louie Louie. Although the Troggs did have a minor hit with another song (which I can't even remember, hence the one hit wonder status!)

Rick Derringer (US guitarist/session musician/song writer & producer who worked with many musician's especially Johnny & Edgar Winter back in the 1970s) use to do a tasty heavy live version of You Really Got Me back in the 1970s & 1980s.
The other Troggs song that you maybe thinking of is 'Love Is All Around' that was covered by a British band (I can't think of there name?) back in the 1990s and they had a BIG HIT with it much to Reg Presley's delight when the royalty check thudded on his doormat!!
