I like both so it's a tough call. Clapton was great up to about 1971. Gets far, far too much adulation for very little in recent years. Having Ginger and Jack behind him in 2005 made a difference. Outside that forget it except for the odd occassion.
Rory on the other hand gets far, far too little adulation. Anyone one that suggests that Clapton is on a different level is either American (where Rory isn't so well known), blindly accepts the commonly accepted default position or just needs to listen more objectively (because Rory was that good, particularly at his best). Rory also attracts interest from many different types of musicians, not just rock or blues officianados.
At their best I can't call it but I will go for Rory as he was a more humble genuine character.
