Mick Jagger, by a country mile. Did he have the prettiest voice? Nah, it's certainly not as bad as SOME people make it out to be, but his vocal range doesn't match Mercury or Plants. What separates him is his songwriting. He was a better lyricist than either of the others. What's significant about this to me, is that he puts so much more grit and energy into his singing. When he sings love in vain, gimme shelter, rocks off, take it or leave it, etc., all very different songs, he has a different approach and puts different emotions into it. He's more of an everyday man who you can relate to when he says the things he says, and that means more to me than anything.

My top three would be Stephen Christian (Anberlin), Paco Estrada (South FM) and Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins). If we were including solo vocalist Dallas Green aka City and Colour would top the list as the most beautiful vocal I've heard. :grinthumb

Depending on what your looking for I like Jim Morrison's stage presence but John Kay does it for me. Rough vocals, tall, black leather and been said many times he looks like he's going to kick the shit out of the front three rows. The right songs for the right guy with the right band name. I've never owned a Harley, lol

A thread like this is going to be entirely subjective. Also there would be a marked difference between 'Best Lead Singer' and 'Best Front Man/Woman'. As far as fronting a band goes, I would suggest that just about everybody who has held that position in a band over the last 50 years has watched Jagger and asked themselves 'I wonder if I could ooze that sort of charisma?' Of course he stole his moves in the beginning from James Brown, but he's made an art of it, and he's still doing it!
As far as quality of the singing goes there would be many up for the mantle. I'm not saying he's the best, but I would throw David Gilmour into the mix for the pure variety he's produced over the years. When he first joined Pink Floyd he was known for being able to mimic other singers, and that's what he did when they were touring in '68/'69 - mimic Syd's vocals. Since then he's demonstrated the ability to change his vocal style to fit the song. It could be a fairly harsh delivery (Young Lust, Time, Money) or a smoother one (Fat Old Sun, Comfortably Numb).
He's obviously more renowned as a guitarist, but I think he's been under-rated as a vocalist.
