Along with Rush I would consider Heep to be one of the first bands to combine heavy rock and progressive rock.

This is a great album. It's not perfect but it's very strong and has one of my all time favorite songs in "the wizard."

Great review, fantastic album. Easy Livin and Traveller in Time should be a part of everyone's set list. Everyone.

Indeed a classic album, but for it isn't their best.

For me it is Sweet Freedom with Pilgrim, Stealin', Seven Stars and If I had the time

The Magician's Birthday is their best album in my view. I had a friend who played (association) football in a league with David Byron. I also liked the John Lawton era, particularly the Jack Williams songs on Innocent Victim. The later stuff doesn't interest me much, despite some good musicians, probably because they don't seem like Uriah Heep without Ken Hensley.

Have you listened to their latest two albums, Wake The Sleeper and Into The Wild?

So question:
On the song The Spell, the slide guitar lead part, is that a mellotron playing those backing chords or actual vocal "ahhs"?
