Soot and Stars
I AM SOOT!
Some of the best songs as well as the best voices are when male artist pick a female to join them in a song! A lot of times these females are heard just with those artist and fade away and sometimes they achieve a solo career themselves! Usually it's the former regardless of their vocal talent. They sound so good with that artist that people can't imagine hearing them separate!
1. "Promise Tomorrow Tonight" by Greg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois
Greg Alexander is well known as the force behind New Radicals which Danielle Brisebois also sang background vocals on. This song was featured on the prior solo release that Greg Released under his own name overseas! In my world these two are the king and queen of pop! Danielle as well as Greg in my opinion were two far ahead of their time but while Danielles solo career missed the mark she has had great success as a songwriter for other artist penning "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield for example!
2. "Short Stories With Tragic Endings" by From Autumn to Ashes ft. Melanie Wills
This song would be just another screamo metal song if it wasn't for Melanies angelic vocals to add to the madness that is this symphonic metal epic! The song is meant for her to add light to the darkness and it's one of the most cathartic experiences I've ever experienced. Melanie would appear on one more From Autumn to Ashes album in a solo song as well as being the front woman for pop punk band "One True Thing". Neither one would bring her success but her voice will haunt me forever.
I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)
by Meatloaf ft. Patti Russo
I don't care how many haters hate this song! I love it! One of the reasons I love this song is Patti Russos voice! D***! God was it sexy! I mean it oozed sex and rock n' roll! Meatloaf was always good at working off of other people and this was my first introduction to Meatloaf so maybe Patti wasn't the best to sing with him but she was the one my generation heard! I know of no successful projects Patti did outside of Meatloaf!
"I Remember" by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan
Never in my life had I heard a pairing so meant to be together. Sure I love Damiens solo songs but the magical, chilling, hairs standing up on my arms moments come when they sing together (I Remember, 9 Crimes, The Blowers Daughter, Cold Water, Eskimo, etc.)! The best moment comes from this live performance of "I Remember" where Lisa is otherworldly! She starts off so modest and soothing and by the time the videos over she appears to be possessed by the emotion she's expelling as well as the rest! Lisa is the closest thing to a siren I've ever heard! Her voice would draw me in and lure me no matter what the consequence! Lisa had one solo c.d. come out recently which was a nice coffeehouse type c.d. but she's missing a certain part of her that amien seems to draw out. Sales for the c.d. were modest at best!
"...Said Sadly"
by The Smashing Pumpkins with James Iha on vocals w/ Nina Gordon
This is just a cute song and one of the songs that showed James Iha was a great vocalist. I even like his solo work! Him and Nina are a great pair and sound well....cute together! Nina off course is an awesome musician and singer in her popular former band Veruca Salt as well as her solo career! Out of the 5 she's been the most accomplished on her own!
