Some overrated groups and artists that I just don't see the attraction.

5. Jimi Hendrix- Don't hate him or anything but I just don't really get his music.

4. Velvet Underground- If you have read Rolling Stone magazine through the years you would think this was the greatest group ever. I bought one of their albums one time and found their music completely unlistenable. Threw the album away.

3. Janis Joplin- Her screeching voice hurts my ears. Ugh!

2. Steve Miller Band- I really can't stand his voice either. And he's supposed to be this great guitarist but there's rarely any soloing on his songs, just riffs. Whoopee!

...and last but certainly least:

1. The Doors- Man, do I hate this group. Songs are boring, Morrison was a complete phony and that organ!:bu: I've tried to listen to them, a former brother-in-law tried to turn me on to them but I just don't hear anything worth hearing. Break On Through is the only song from them that doesn't set me to swearing and pushing radio buttons when the Doors are played on air. I was even dragged by some of my Army buddies to see Morrison's grave in Paris while I was stationed overseas. I was respectful, but the cult around this no-talent hack is completely baffling to me. Sorry to Doors fans but I can't stand your group.

Too many to mention. Here's a quick list though, with a few comments for the peanut gallery:

  • Nirvana - most overrated and overhyped group of no-talent hacks in the history of music.
  • U2 - had a few decent tunes in the 80's. How they survived this long on anything and everything they've done since Josh Tree is beyond me.
  • Radiohead - Complete garbage, most boring shit I've ever heard in my life. I'd rather listen to boy bands or 90's pop-country than this crap.
  • Neil Young
  • Bob Dylan
  • David Bowie
  • Bruce Springsteen - Other than Born in the USA, I'd never listen to another one of his albums.
  • Tori Amos - I honestly have zero clue what the attraction to her is. Bleh
  • Sex Pistols - RnRHOF after 1 record? C'mon Another group of no-talent hacks that deserve to be erased from the anals of music history!
  • Tool
  • The Ramones - another truly crappy band, but compared to the sex pistols, these guys were the Beatles and Stones put together.
  • The Pixies - Absolute garbage, possibly the worst band ever.
  • The Smiths - More garbage
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Grateful Dead
  • Audioslave / Rage Against the Machine (same shit isn't it?)
  • Muse
  • Coldplay
  • System of a Down
I better stop. And for anyone who likes any of these bands, it's not a slam at you. If you like them, that's great. I'm just sharing my own 2 copper pieces, nothing more.

I agree with bout 85% of this list. The only ones I find to disagree on is Audioslave or Rage Against the Machine(me personally, I never thought both bands were considered the "best" in the type of music they make), but I'll give them both a good listen once in a while. David Bowie to me is a good songwriter, the music though, eh...I could name better stuff. I would be interested who else you would list...lol.

The lobby of the Ritz hotel.
I'd like to throw in another one: Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I can't stand their music. It's not even technically country and it's so backwoods redneck that my vomit after hearing it would probably be red, white, and blue.

I'll extend my list...

Foo Fighters-Am I the only one who thinks Dave Grohl is a terrible singer? Stick to drums dude.
Guns N' Roses-Appetite for Destruction...what else after that?
Kings of Leon-Decent music, but gets way to much radio-play and hype. Maybe I just don't see it.
Nirvana-Cobain is far from the greatest songwriter...or singer of his era. Some songs I can get into, but the rest sound really annoying and I find hard to listen to.
Slipknot-Doesn't this band have like, 8 or 9 members in it? What?!? God, and the music STILL sounds awful...
The Ramones-(see Lynch's reason, he sums it up good)
Radiohead-As Lynch said, boring music with no substance to it. I've tried and tried again to get into them, but just can't and don't see why they are as popular as they are.
Sex Pistols-A one album wonder. Sid is the worst singer I've ever heard attempt to sing a song. Another one of those bands I've tried to get into, but just don't see it.
Nickelback-Do I have to explain? lol
Green Day-First few albums were good, but the music got stale. Not the face of punk-rock and don't deserve their own video game.

For goodness sake, I don't need you to like Radiohead but 'no substance', really? They make music with almost unparalleled complexity and lyrics with the depth of a poet. I mean they may not appeal to everyone but they are most definitely not lacking substance.

This thread is about over-rated bands not your opinion on bands you hate.

Over-rate:
To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

Just because you don't like their music, does not mean they aren't talented or good at what they do.
IMO; Look at Justin Beiber, hoards of fans (teen girls), gets played on the radio a bit and has made quite a bit of money. Does he lack talent? Not in reeling millions of girls but in terms of song writing ...

Exactly my thoughts, as I said a few pages back, its different to dislike then to say its overexposed or overated.

I think Radiohead have quiet a bit of substance and great lyrics but "uparalleled complexity" is where I'll have to disagree. I think they are in fact paralleled and surpassed by quite a few artists. In the grand scheme of things they are certainly above average but nowhere near the creme de la creme if you ask me.

^^ The five groups I named are overrated imho. The fact that I can't stand them is a bonus for me in this thread.

But to go even further into the overrated part, I'll name a few more that I actually like but think they get too much of a pass from critics and fans.

The Who- like alot of their music but Tommy, their supposed masterpiece, is too self-indulgent and inane as a concept that it's hard too believe that people take it seriously. A pinball-playing messiah?:wtf:

Eric Clapton- have alot of his albums and listen to them quite a bit. However I've never heard anything from him whether it be solo, Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, or Derek and the Dominoes that made me think to write "Clapton Is God". Where does that come from?

John Lennon (solo)- have his greatest hits package, Lennon Legend, and imho that's all anyone would ever need. Alot of his studio albums were filled with quite a bit of....well, filler. Double Fantasy has maybe 4 or 5 decent songs on it and the rest is utter crap. All of his albums are about the same.

U2- really like this band however their track record of releasing good albums followed by bad ones or average ones speaks for itself. Boy, the debut, was good. October wasn't. War was good if not great, The Unforgettable Fire is very forgettable. The Joshua Tree is, imho, the best album of the 80s and the follow-up Rattle And Hum is also excellent. Actung Baby is good but not on par with the previous 2. Zooropa was a complete mess. Horrid, horrid album. Quit buying their albums after that disaster until How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and that was somewhat disappointing to me as well after reading all the 5-star reviews and the hype of it being the best of their career. Hardly.

Nirvana- don't mind their music at all but I don't hear greatness. Just a decent rock band.

Jim Morrison? Phony?? Hrm... his lyrics were great, and I can see how his drug use and drunken ramblings at concerts can make people think he is phony or crappy or whatever. Fame and fortune create new paths that open, that can lead to self destruction and addiction that happens quite frequently in the music world! I find Morrison's story and struggles quite sad...
But hey, I think he was a visionary and some people don't. I definitely sit on the opposite side of that spectrum! And the organ is great - it gives The Doors it's own unique sound, that is set apart from everything else.
It's hard to pick out overrated bands, so I'll just sit out of this one~~
