Ian Gillan's post Purple bands (Ian Gillan Band and Gillan) were all pretty successful in Europe. Sadly, we here in the states missed out.

IGB were almost fusion with a lot of jazz leanings where Gillan were metal.

This is some footage of a great late 70's metal band that probably didn't stand a chance in the U.S. amidst disco and punk at that time. I don't think they toured the States but once.

Good footage and a very interesting thread Telecat! When Ian Gillan left Purple. and eventually formed THE IAN GILLAN BAND.......there was many..me included who thought he had "lost it".....jazz fusion indeed.Apparently......they were big in Japan. I remember borrowing one of his albums and it was light years away from" IN ROCK !!"
When GILLAN was formed the timing was just right ,the NWOBHM was kicking off and things just fell into place. He also had a great band/musicians Mccoy bass Gers/Torme guitars Underwood drums.....not forgetting Colin Towns on keyboards . No pretentious jazz fusion here...they rocked!!
Years later..you know as you get older musical tastes can change a bit so it would be interesting to hear some IAN GILLAN BAND..again

Personally, I love IGB. It wasn't all fusion, but the band seemed to "overplay" an awful lot. Scarabus is my favorite album.
But I totally agree that the timing for Gillan the band was right with the NWOBHM getting popular. Even years later in 1990 he put out Toolbox under the Gillan moniker. That was a damn good album. He screams his ass off for sure. Classic Ian!

Here's a good track from that album:

Have you heard Gillan's cover of Stevie Wonders "Living for the City"? pretty awesome cover actually. The solo is fantastic.

They were pretty well known among my friends as a kid . I have Glory Road and Magic on vinyl the original pressing, and both on CD too, along with The Japanese Album, Gillan , Future Shock , Gillan's Inn on CD. I also have Scarabus and Child in Time from The Ian Gillan Band .

After listening to the videos I'm going to have to pick up Mr. Universe and Tool Box as well . I was always told Mr. Universe was the one to get that I didn't have but never did .
