The Scissor Sisters are a group from New York City that form in 2001. They draw from glam rock, pop, disco, and various other genres. Upon introducing my friend John to them he described their music as if "the Bee Gees and Elton John had a baby that was dunked in disco." and that's a fairly accurate assessment.
While they've not had a large amount of success in their native country of the US they are hugely popular in Canada, Australia, and Europe, particularly the UK with both their self titled debut album and it's followup "Ta-Dah" reaching number one with the former being the highest selling album there that year.
The Scissor Sisters had a hard time getting off the ground for a couple years but in late 2003 their cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" started to get played by DJ's in British clubs. This brought the band to the attention of the label Polydor who immediately brought the band in the record their first album.
After it's release their self titled album received little attention but upon the release of their version of "Comfortably Numb" as a single (which reached #10 on the UK charts) the album began to build the momentum that would turn it into a runaway hit. After the success of their breakthrough single four other singles were released, "Take Your Mama", "Laura", "Mary", and "Filthy/Gorgeous", all of which reached the top 20 in the UK with the latter becoming their highest charting single at the time, reaching #5. After five top 20 singles it is no surprise that the album reach the #1 slot, with it eventually going multi-platinum as well as not only being the highest selling album of 2004 but also becoming the 10th highest-selling album of the 21st century, and the 51st biggest-selling of all time in the UK. Despite such substantial success overseas the album didn't even crack the top 100 on the Billboard charts.
In May 2005, after substantial touring, the Scissor Sisters reentered the studio to record their follow up. Early in the recording process the band achieved one of their dreams by collaborating with Elton John on the songs "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" and "Intermission" where he helped write the songs as well as providing piano. Sir Elton's aid played off big time as "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", the lead single to "Ta-Dah", became the biggest hit of their career as it rocketed to number one in several countries and was one of the highest selling singles in the UK that year. Upon "Ta-Dah"'s release the Scissor Sisters achieved double success as it debut at #1 during the four week period where "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" topped the UK's single charts. "Ta-Dah" even made a decent showing in the US market by peaking at #19.
Just a few days ago The Scissor Sisters released their third album, "Night Work", but I have not actually gotten a chance to listen to anything off it yet but I'll be sure to provide input once I do.
