Re: Official Tom Petty Thread

TP and the HB has been a favorite of mine since I saw them on a triple bill in 1978. The show was (respectively) David Johansen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Journey. It was Journey's Infinity (breakout) tour and they owned the show.

Petty's biggest songs in those days were American Girl, Breakdown, I Need To Know and my all time personal favorite Petty tune Listen To Her Heart. I was 14 when I saw that show and I WISH TO GOD that I had been old enough to have the appreciation for those songs that I have today.

I'd discovered something new in that show and when Damn The Torpedoes released a little over a year later, it solidified my status as a Petty Fan.

To this day I proudly proclaim my Pettyness.

Listen To her Heart was the one that sold me over too, That one really epitomizes the early Petty/HB's sound:grinthumb

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been a consistently great band. I've only got a greatest hits CD of them, but I would like to get Damn the Torpedoes sometime soon. Favorite song: Mary Jane's Last Dance. Such a smooth song, and I get a feeling I can't describe when I hear that intro play

Check out the Mudcrutch album... it has a very similar feel to LDWMJ:D

new petty track and video released... Harder rock type song.. I think Mike Cambell is doing more of the writing on this album, it reminds me of "I don't Want To Fight"

Also, just another B side I came across on youtube from Petty and crew

Good news for me-ZZ Top is opening for Petty from Sept.16 to Oct.2.I had to miss ZZ Top last year when Aerosmith cancelled their tour.I may have to wait 5 months after the Petty tour change but at least I get to see ZZ Top instead of Joe Cocker:grinthumb

ZZ Top was excellent last summer.. they were really, really great... I'm pretty psyched to see Drive By Truckers, haven't really checked them out, but I've heard great things.. and of course... completely psyched to see Petty:heheh:

any thoughts on his new tune yet?
