Here's an artist who broke me into a variety of sounds that neither I or a lot of people had gotten into before. I think anytime an artist breaks down walls for music they are awesome. I never would have heard the beauty of ambient or electronica pieces if it weren't for Moby. I tend to follow what he does with mixed results but regardless I'm a fan. His music a lot of times is like his personality, quiet and subtle but has a lot to say. Other times it's bursting with soul and sometimes it just rocks! At his best, Moby's music is just gorgeous and breathtaking! I think those with an ear for classical could enjoy some of these! Here are my Moby faves!

God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters
(my favorite piece, gorgeous)

Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad
(a great use of soul samples, just moves you)

Find My Baby
(see above)

Guitar Flute and String
(so soothing)

Novio

Now as a Moby fan (if any of them visit CRF :heheh:) you'll noticed that I left off tracks from newer albums like Hotel and Last Night but that's more about the type of albums they are. I like them as a whole like the others but even more as a unit because those are made to be cohesive as each one has a theme. I also like Moby better as a manipulator of sounds rather than when he contributes vocals. Moby as a vocalist is definitely adequate but it's not his strong point IMO. Anyway, any Moby thoughts? :grinthumb

The instrumental stuff is his strong point with me as well!! God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters could be a movie score and Novio is quite good as well!!

Re: The Official "Moby" Thread

Moby's style certainly runs the gamet from Electronic and Techno to Etheral and Atmospheric. I've only skimmed the surface of his voluminous catalogue with hits like "Porcelain" (naturally) and "Natural Blues", if only because iTunes has almost ruined me from buying cds.

I think I remember reading in Rolling Stone that Moby records his music on his own gear in his own home studio (cutting studio rental costs), and was also real big on licensing his music out for movies and television.

On a lighter note... did anyone else see the episode of "How I Met Your Mother" with Moby? :lmao:

Re: The Official "Moby" Thread

I have a ton of respect for Moby,,,but not a big fan of his music. No expert when it comes to his music, I think he did the main theme song for the 2nd Bourne movie and that would be my favorite song.

Let's hear from the peanut gallery the absolute hands down Masterwork that Moby has ever recorded...barring a compilation CD.;)

Actually I stick with his breakthrough if I can't pick a comp!

Play

But this comp. has some of his greatest works and is a great catch up to Play! It's my favorite listen!

Those are great songs Dave and what got me to buy Play in the beginning! :grinthumb You are right about your facts and there is actually a c.d. of the songs Moby had licensed called I Like To Score! :grinthumb

The new album sounds like it's back to soothing ambience and I think that's great :grinthumb
