Definitely a plain Jane who has some cute moments and photos, and her drugging certainly didn't help her appearance, but that ain't what it was about. She was completely full of soul and emotion in her voice as she belted immensely.

Yeah, her whole town bullied her and laughed her out of her home-town... Then she came back after fame and they shunned her. Kinda sad.

I didn't know that, very cruel... apart from the original question, I think music should not reflect her looks- we know what happened after..... 1933!
