I 'borrowed' this from another site, so I hope they don't mind too much. Imitation is a form of flattery after all. The idea is that you put a favourite band or performer in each category, and add your own genre or sub-genre. Some are open to interpretation, like progressive or pop.

1. Rock, pop
2. Hard rock
3. Blues
4. Progressive
5. Electronic
6. Avant-garde
7. Punk, new wave
8. Soul
9. Reggae
10. Techno, synth, dance
11. Folk
12. Country
13. Classical
14. Modern classical
15. Jazz, fusion
16. Singer/songwriter

This is mine
1. Rock, pop - Manfred Mann
2. Hard rock - Budgie
3. Blues - Groundhogs
4. Progressive - Yes
5. Electronic - Tangerine Dream
6. Avant-garde - The Neu!
7. Punk, new wave - The Stranglers
8. Soul - Temptations
9. Reggae - Johnny Nash
10. Techno, synth, dance - Alexander O'Neal
11. Folk - Pentangle
12. Country - Johnny Cash
13. Classical - Erik Satie
14. Modern classical - Nigel Kennedy
15. Jazz, fusion - Isotope
16. Singer/songwriter - James Taylor

I'm adding
17. Space rock - Steve Hillage

The next person puts their choice of band for each category, including space-rock and adds a category. As it continues there are more categories each time, but you can leave spaces if you wish.

There are more genres remaining (and sub-genres of the above) than you might think: List of popular music genres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
