For the 1991 voting we will continue our two-tiered voting. For the nomination process you should vote for your favorite 15 artists. However of those 15, only 5 can come from this year’s new eligible list. Of course you don't have to vote for 5 newly eligible. If you feel like there are only 1 or 2 worthy, just vote for them and use the rest of your votes on previously eligible. The list below is not inclusive, I have gotten rid of some names from the previous extremely long lists, but if you want to vote for somebody not on the list they are fair game as long as they aren't already inducted and debuted in 1965 or before (and after 1940). After the Christmas holiday expanded voting times, we are going back to 1 week for the nominations then 1 week for the inductions. So voting for the nomination round will close in the early afternoon Sunday January 15. Hopefully the voting numbers will trend back up now that the holidays are over. I was disappointed with the turnout for the induction half of the vote over the last 2 weeks. I hope everybody is finding this entertaining. Whether you have voted in previous elections or not, you are more than welcome to join in the fun.

An FYI, make of it what you will. The following artists have received one vote and no more than one vote 3 or more times:

Bobby Darin
Frankie Valli
Conway Twitty
Johnny Mathis
Charles Mingus
Chubby Checker
Serge Gainsbourg

My take is this: if you are the one person voting for this artist, you might want to either give it up for now, or write a comment persuading the rest of us to see it your way. that is all.

I will start however, as I am the one (I think) that has been voting for Bobby Darin. Darin started in the legendary Brill Building working with the legendary Don Kirshner. Then went on to success with the help of another legend, Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun (OK, I won't use the word legend any more). Ertegun helped him produce his first hit "Splish Splash" written by Darin at a time when writing and performing a song was a rarity. He followed that with another smash hit that he himself wrote "Dream Lover". He did not write everything himself as his best known song is "Mack the Knife". However, if you know that song, it is probably because of Bobby Darin's version. He also hit big with "Beyond the Sea" as a standard. He went on to become more of a country artist thereafter, before dying an early death. He also wrote hit songs for Wayne Newton and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds.
In all he had 22 songs that charted in the top 40 before an early death of heart complications. Darin deserves way more respect than he has gotten around here so far.
