I went to another show with my daughter and niece recently. The opening act was a band called Sunday 1994. Definitely lo-fi, Indie, shoegazer music but they left a positive impression on me. Her voice reminded me of Julia Lewis or Juliana Hatfield often but the sound was softer, slower, and whispy. Is it a prerequisite that all Indie bands play a Fender Jaguar of some sort?
Now, granted, the great majority of the audience of the show were young females but the energy and optimism of the crowds seems to be a little different than when I was their age. Often many of these girls will sing along and move to even the pre-concert music. Especially when it is a popular song. I mean, think back to when you were 17 or 19. Do you ever remember much of the audience singing and dancing together along to the music being played before the concert started?
The main act was Girl In Red. Again, another Indie pop/rock singer/songwriter of a particular style and common sound. My daughter usually has command of the music when she rides in the car with us so I am vaguely familiar with a few of her songs. Mentally, she is a wreck but harmless it seems. I am not making fun of it, it was just strange at times how often her show would sort of be interrupted by her jumping off the rails in between songs. The audience was behind her the entire show and very supportive and even entertained by her manic depression showing through.
Anyway, we ended the night with everyone having a lot of fun and with me gaining appreciation for the bands Sunday 1994 and Girl In Red. If you like Independent pop music, check them out sometime if you have not already.
