Another great radio station I listened to in the 80s was KXLU. They played a lot of weird stuff. It's were I heard Widowed Isis' "Jim Morrison (I Want to Be)," The Parameters "Material Possession," and a lot of great stuff like Suburban Lawns (KROQ also played them pretty regularly, but only their song "Gidget Goes To Hell") and God Bullies. I definitely think my taste in music was heavily shaped by what they were playing more than anything else.

Hmmm....missed this thread before.....
I have always listened to prog rock ....so lots of prog things (Pat Metheny, Marillion, Kate Bush, Rush, Gabriel)
...but as for other bands that were popular then....big fan of the first 5 on the list below.
