    I'm not a huge fan of either band, but they both are at about the same level IMO.

    Sabbath was more influential to Heavy Metal, IMO, but Deep Purple was a much better band ( IMO of course)

    I agree. Black Sabbath has demonstrated more staying power but Deep Purple was the much bigger and more popular band when the seeds of heavy metal were being sown. Deep Purple should therefore have been more influential at the time.
