Vinyl album sales are on track to achieve their biggest for almost two decades.

Sales are expected to pass the million mark by the end of the year as figures compiled by the Official Charts Company show that almost 800,000 vinyl albums were sold in the first nine months of this year. This has already outstripped last year's overall total of 780,674.

The last time vinyl hit seven-figure sales was 1996, led by Fugees' album, The Score.

Despite being released in September 2013, Arctic Monkeys' fifth record AM – last year's biggest seller – has continued to notch up the highest sales of 2014. Jack White's Lazaretto follows them up at number two.

The only album in the top 10 to have been released this year is Royal Blood's self-titled debut, as other appearances include Led Zeppelin, The Stone Roses and Pink Floyd.

The vinyl revival comes after sales hit a low in 2007 with a mere 205,000 copies being shifted – a fifth of this year's predicted sale.
