This Day In Rock History: February 12th


1939, Born on this day, Ray Manzarek, keyboards, with The Doors, who had the 1967 US No.1 & UK No.9 single 'Light My Fire' and the 1971 single 'Riders On The Storm'. Manzarek died on 20th May 2013, he had suffered from bile duct cancer for many years. He formed the band with lead singer Jim Morrison in 1965 after a chance meeting in Venice Beach, Los Angeles.

1956, Born on this day, Brian Robertson, guitar, Thin Lizzy, (1973 UK No.6 single 'Whisky In The Jar'), Member of Motorhead.

1977, Pink Floyd released their tenth studio album Animals in the US, where it reached No.3 in the charts. The album's cover image, a pig floating between two chimneys on Battersea Power Station, was conceived by bassist Roger Waters and realized by long-time design and photographic collaborators Hipgnosis.

1972: Yes released the single “Roundabout” which went on to become their second top 40 single in the U.S., peaking at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart & remains a staple on classic rock radio to this day.

1981: Rush released Moving Pictures which went on to become their most commercially successful album in the U.S. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 Album Chart the following month & sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone.

1994: Alice in Chains made history as their EP Jar of Flies became the first EP to reach number one on the Billboard 200 Album Chart.

2007: The Police held a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood to announce their reunion tour. The group also held a public rehearsal.

1967: The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” backed with “Strawberry Fields Forever” was released in the U.S.

1972: Led Zeppelin was forced to cancel a concert in Singapore when officials wouldn’t let them off the plane because of their long hair.

1982: The 300 pound gravestone on the grave of Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant was stolen from an Orange Park, FL, cemetery. Police found it two weeks later in a dry river bed.

1973 - David Bowie collapsed at the end of his Valentines Day Show at New York's Radio City Music Hall reportedly due to total exhaustion.

1974 - The Captain and Tennille were married.

1977 - The B52s's perform their first concert together in Athens, GA.

1977 - Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville" was released.

1981 - Billy Idol left Generation X for a solo career.

1984 - Elton John and Renata Blauel were married. The marriage lasted for four years.

1986 - Frank Zappa appeared on "Miami Vice" playing a crime boss named "Mr. Frankie."

1970, The Who appeared at Leeds University, England. The show was recorded for the bands forthcoming 'Live At Leeds' album. Since its initial reception, Live at Leeds has been cited by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time. The University of Leeds refectory, has now been named a national landmark in the UK, commemorated with a blue plaque.

1965, American singer and pianist Nat King Cole died of lung cancer. First hit was the 1943 'Straighten Up and Fly Right', had the 1955 US No.2 single 'A Blossom Fell' and 1957 UK No.2 single 'When I Fall In Love' plus over 20 other US & UK Top 40 singles. Father of singer Natalie Cole. In 1956 he became the first black American to host a television variety show.

1981, American guitarist Mike Bloomfield was found dead in his car in San Francisco from an accidental heroin overdose. He was a member of the Paul Butterfield band and Electric Flag and had played on Bob Dylan's album 'Highway 61 Revisited'. In 2003 he was ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
