1965: The Supremes’ “Stop in the Name Of Love” was released.

1969: George Harrison’s tonsils were removed at London’s University College Hospital. The tonsils were destroyed so they could not be sold.

1972: The official Beatles Fan Club disbanded.

1967 : The duo Peter and Gordon announce their split.

1969 : Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker of Cream announce that they are forming a new group with Steve Winwood of Traffic. Ric Grech later joins on bass, and the group is called Blind Faith.

1975 : The Ohio Players' "Fire" hits #1

1942, Born on this day, Carole King, US singer, songwriter who wrote many songs with Gerry Goffin including the 1962 UK No.3 & US No.22 single, 'It Might As Well Rain Until September'. Her 1970 US No.1 album 'Tapestry' has sold over 15 million copies and became a Grammy award winner in 71.

1981, American singer Bill Haley was found dead, fully clothed on his bed at his home in Harlingen, Texas from a heart attack, Haley had sold over 60 million records during his career. Scored the 1955 UK & US No.1 single 'Rock Around the Clock' and became known as the first Rock 'n' Roll star. Haley was blinded in his left eye as a child due to a botched operation and later adopted his distinctive spit-curl hairstyle to distract attention from his blind eye.

1997, Brian Connolly singer with the 1970's Glam rock group Sweet died of kidney and liver failure aged 51. Connolly replaced Ian Gillan (later of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath ) in Wainwright's Gentlemen who became Sweetshop and then shortened to Sweet.

1964 - The Beatles made the first of three record-breaking appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show." 73 million people watched the show. It was their American TV debut.

1972 - Wings made their concert debut at Nottingham University in England.

1983 - Prince's "Little Red Corvette" was released.

1993 - Mick Jagger released a solo album called "Wandering Spirit."

1993 - Paul McCartney released a solo album, "Off The Ground."

1966: Rachel Bolan bassist for Skid Row was born.

1985: Don Henley peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “The Boys of Summer” which was his second top ten single as a solo artist in the U.S.

2005: Who singer Roger Daltrey was made a Commander of the Order of British Empire at Buckingham Palace. Daltrey received the honor for his career in music & for his charitable work.

1970: ZZ Top performed their first concert in Beaumont, TX.

1975: Dave Alexander, bassist for The Stooges died of pulmonary edema at a hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. He was 27 years old.

1978: Van Halen released their self-titled debut album. It peaked at number nineteen on the Billboard 200 album chart & went on to sell ten million copies in the U.S. alone.

1979: Dire Straits released their debut single “Sultans of Swing” in the U.S., which went on to reach number four on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

1964, The Beatles made their live concert debut in the US at the Washington Coliseum. Over 350 police surrounded the stage to keep the 8,000 plus screaming fans in control. One police officer who found the noise so loud stuck a bullet in each ear as ear plugs. The Beatles had to stop three times and turn Ringo's drum kit around and re-position their microphones so that they faced a different part of the audience. The set list: ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘From Me to You’, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘This Boy’, ‘All My Loving’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘Please Please Me’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’, ‘Twist and Shout’, and ‘Long Tall Sally’.

1972, Led Zeppelin scored their third US Top 20 hit single with 'Black Dog / Misty Mountain Hop', peaking at No.15, and taken from their fourth album. The song's title is a reference to a nameless black Labrador retriever that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording. Robert Plant recorded his vocal for the track in two takes.

2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub. Beverly Hills paramedics arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m. and found the singer unresponsive and performed CPR. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Local police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent." It was later ruled by the coroner to have been an "accidental drowning"
