1949 Bill Bruford (drummer for Yes, King Crimson) is born in Sevenoaks, Kent, England.

1949 Andrew Latimer (frontman for the prog rock band Camel) is born in Guildford, Surrey, England.

1959 Iron Maiden's original lead singer, Paul Di'Anno, is born in London, England.

1963 The first Monterey Folk Festival took place over three days in Monterey, California. The festival featured Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Peter Paul and Mary. The 1967 Monterey Rock festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who as well as the first major public performances of Janis Joplin. It was also the first major performance by Otis Redding in front of a predominantly white audience.

1968 The first Miami Pop event took place with an estimated 100,000 people attending the concert, which was promoted by Richard O'Barry & Michael Lang (later famous as the promoter of Woodstock). Bands featured at the festival included Steppenwolf, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Mothers of Invention, Blue Cheer, Chuck Berry, The Blues Image, Pacific Gas and Electric, Three Dog Night and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

2017 American musician, singer and songwriter Chris Cornell died suddenly in Detroit after performing at a show with Soundgarden. Cornell was known for his role as one of the architects of the 1990s grunge movement, and for his near four octave vocal range as well as his powerful vocal belting technique. He released four solo studio albums as well as working with Audioslave and Temple of the Dog.

1947 Steve Currie (bass player for T. Rex) is born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England.

1949 Dusty Hill (bassist, keyboardist, co-vocalist of ZZ Top) is born Joseph Michael Hill in Dallas, Texas.

1954 Phil Rudd (drummer for AC/DC) is born Phillip Hugh Norman Witschke Rudzevecuis in Melbourne, Australia.

1975 Lynyrd Skynyrd release the single "Saturday Night Special." The B-side is "Made in the Shade." It's the only single released from the Nuthin' Fancy album.

2006 Freddie Garrity (frontman of Freddie & the Dreamers) dies at age 69 while on holiday in North Wales.

1978 - Dire Straits released their first major label single, "Sultans Of Swing," recorded on a £120 budget — about $180.

1979 - Supertramp went to No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Breakfast In America, the group's only U.S. No. 1. It featured three Billboard hit singles: "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger" and "Take the Long Way Home."
