This Day In Rock History: November 15th

1949 Steve Fossen (bassist, percussionist for Heart) is born.

1974 Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger is born in Alberta, Canada.

1969 Janis Joplin calls out a policeman at her concert in Tampa, Florida, when he uses a bullhorn to yell at audience members who have left their seats. "Don't F--k with those people!," she screams. "What are you so uptight about? Did you buy a $5 ticket?" The cop tells Joplin that she needs to tell the crowd to remain seated, and she replies, "I'm not telling them s--t." After more stage ranting where Joplin threatens to kick his face in, she is arrested after the show, charged with using "v*u*l*g*a*r and indecent language." After posting a $504 bail, the charges are later dropped and she pays a $200 fine.

2011 Mark "Moogy" Klingman
(keyboardist for Utopia) dies of bladder cancer in New York City, at age 61.

1971 Grand Funk Railroad release their sixth album, "E Pluribus Funk". Music critics bash it, but fans think otherwise and buy enough copies to push it to number five on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. The title of the LP is a play on the former motto of the US government, E Pluribus Unum (Out of many, one).

1962 The Four Seasons' "Big Girls Don't Cry" reaches the top spot on the Billboard singles chart, just as their first hit, "Sherry" did earlier in the year. Songwriter Bob Crewe later said that he was inspired to write the song after he heard actor John Payne use the phase "big girls don't cry" in a 1956 movie called Slightly Scarlet. In the UK, the song reached #13.

2021 Keith Allison, a member of Paul Revere And The Raiders from 1968 to 1975, died of natural causes at the age of 79. Before joining The Raiders he played guitar and harmonica on Sonny & Cher's mega-hit "The Beat Goes On" and later recorded and performed with Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers, Chuck Berry, Alice Cooper, Rick Nelson, The Crickets and Johnny Rivers. As an actor, Allison played Captain James J. White in Gods and Generals (2003) and showed up on episodes of Blossom, 7th Heaven and The Love Boat.
