1945 Soul singer Donny Hathaway is born in Chicago, Illinois, but is be raised by his grandmother in St. Louis, Missouri.

1947 Martin Turner (bassist/lead vocalist for Wishbone Ash) is born in Torquay, Devon, England.

1947 Mariska Veres (lead singer for Shocking Blue) is born in The Hague, Netherlands.

1948 Brownsville Station frontman Michael "Cub" Koda is born in Detroit, Michigan. He writes the group's 1973 hit "Smokin' in the Boy's Room," which is later covered by Motley Crue.

2004 Bruce Palmer (bassist for Buffalo Springfield) dies of a heart attack in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, at age 58.

2011 After 28 years and two children together, Gene Simmons (62) and Shannon Tweed (54) finally get married. Their wedding song is "At Last," sung by their daughter Sophie.

1965 Bob Dylan appears at Carnegie Hall in New York and introduces his new touring band made up of guitarist Robbie Robertson, organist Garth Hudson, bassist Rick Danko, pianist Richard Manual and drummer Levon Helm. They will become known simply as The Band.

2018 Peggy Sue Gerron, the woman who inspired Buddy Holly's 1957 #3 hit, "Peggy Sue", passed away at the age of 78. Holly had originally wrote the tune as "Cindy Lou", but his drummer, Jerry Allison persuaded him to change the title to that of his girlfriend. Gerron and Allison were eventually married, but divorced in 1964.

1941 Ron Meagher (bass guitarist for The Beau Brummels) is born in Oakland, California

1951 Sting is born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. He earns his nickname when a fellow musician says he looks like a bee in his yellow-and-black striped sweater. He is working as a schoolteacher when his band The Police hit the big time.

1965 "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys hits #1 in America. The song was originally released the previous year as "My Girl Sloopy" by the R&B group The Vibrations. That version went to #26.

2017 Tom Petty, 66, goes into cardiac arrest at his Malibu home. He is taken to UCLA medical center, but cannot be revived. Later that night, after his friends and family gather, he is taken off life support.

2000 The Cars singer and bass player Benjamin Orr died of cancer at home in Atlanta at the age of 53. Sang lead vocals on the bands hits ‘Just What I Needed’, ‘Let's Go’ and ‘Drive’.

2002 Original guitarist, vocalist from American psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly Darryl DeLoach died of liver cancer at the age of 56.

1949 Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is born in Palo Alto, California.

1954 Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan is born in Dallas, Texas.

1962 Tommy Lee (drummer for Motley Crue) is born Thomas Lee Bass in Athens, Greece.

1978 At an Aerosmith show in Fort Wayne, Indiana, cops arrest fans for smoking marijuana, prompting Steven Tyler to chastise them Jim Morrison-style from the stage. Tyler announces that the band will bail out anyone who is arrested that night, and the next day they do just that. Understandably, memories of the event are hazy, and the number arrested has been reported at anywhere from 28-58.
