1945 Rocker Ritchie Blackmore (of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Blackmore's Night) is born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England.

1964 UFO guitarist Vinnie Moore is born in New Castle, Delaware.

1969 Dutch bassist Martyn LeNoble (of Porno For Pyros) is born in Vlaardingen, The Netherlands. In 2013, he marries the actress Christina Applegate.

2016 At the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Prince plays his last concert, as he dies a week later. His last song is "Purple Rain."

1967 The Bee Gees release "New York Mining Disaster 1941", which will climb to #10 in the UK and #14 in the US. The song is unusual in that the title never appears in the lyrics, although the originally planned title, "Have You Seen My Wife, Mr. Jones", is heard in the chorus. There actually had been a mining disaster in New York, but it was in 1939, not 1941. The Bee Gees would later say they were inspired to write the song by a 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales.

1948 UFO frontman Phil Mogg is born in Wood Green, London.

1997 INXS release Elegantly Wasted, their last album with lead singer Michael Hutchence, who dies six months later.

1943 Blues rocker Dave Peverett (of Foghat, Savoy Brown) is born in Dulwich, London, England.

1947 Rock drummer Lee Kerslake (of Uriah Heep, Blizzard of Ozz) is born in Winton, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.

1947 Rock singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty (of Stealers Wheel) is born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

1953 Peter Garrett, frontman of the Aussie rock band Midnight Oil, is born in Wahroonga, Sydney. He pursues a law career before joining the band.

1999 Skip Spence of Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape dies of lung cancer two days before his 53rd birthday.

2013 Edwin Shirley the co-founded Edwin Shirley Trucking, which became one of the largest music transport companies in Europe died of cancer. Brian May noted Shirley's importance to their touring operation: 'Edwin was at the head of Queen's vehicle convoy for so many years I can't begin to remember how many... He was a great pal of Gerry Stickells, our illustrious Tour Manager and the two of them wrote the book on how to party on tour.'

This Day In Rock History: April 17th



1983 Felix Pappalardi, producer and bass player with American rock band Mountain was shot dead by his wife Gail Collins during a jealous rage. Collins was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and sentenced to four years in prison. Pappalardi who was 43 had produced the Cream albums 'Disraeli Gears' and 'Wheels of Fire.'

1998 Linda McCartney died after a long battle against cancer. Married Paul McCartney in 1969 when she was working as a photographer. As well as a being a member of Wings, she became an animal rights campaigner and launched her own brand of vegetarian food.

2008 Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen and a member of The E Street Band, died of cancer at the age of 58. Federici had worked with Springsteen for over 40 years, starting with Steel Mill and Child with Springsteen.
