1976 "Play That Funky Music" by a Steubenville, Ohio quintet called Wild Cherry topped the Billboard Pop chart. It was the first of five chart singles for the band who took their name from a box of cough drops.

2017 71-year-old Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine in 1967, officially put the publication up for sale, saying "it's time for young people to run it."

1949 Kerry Livgren (songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist for Kansas) is born in Topeka, Kansas.

1978 WKRP in Cincinnati, a TV series about a radio station that switches format from easy listening to rock, makes its debut on CBS. It lasts four seasons, enjoying support from real radio professionals who recognize the quirky characters (incompetent general manager Arthur Carlson, disheveled morning jock Johnny Fever) in their co-workers.

1979 Greg Arama (bass player for The Amboy Dukes) dies in a motorcycle accident at age 29.

1972 - The Who headlined the Rock At The Oval festival in London.

1976 - "More Than A Feeling" by Boston was released.

1978 - The members of KISS all released solo albums. The members at the time were Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss.

1979 - "Heartache Tonight" by the Eagles was released.

1983 - The album "Lick It Up" was released by KISS.

1987 - KISS released the album "Crazy Nights."

1970 Jimi Hendrix was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Mary Abbot's Hospital in London at the age of 27 after choking on his own vomit. Hendrix left the message 'I need help bad man', on his managers answer phone earlier that night. Rumors and conspiracy theories grew up around Hendrix’s death. Eric Burdon claimed Jimi had committed suicide, but that’s contradicted by reports that he was in a good frame of mind. In 2009, a former Animals roadie published a book claiming that Jimi’s manager had admitted to him that he arranged the murder of Hendrix, since the guitarist wanted out of his contract.

1970, The first UK Glastonbury Festival took place featuring Marc Bolan, Ian Anderson, Keith Christmas, Quintessence, Amazing Blondel, and Sam Apple Pie.

1979, The No Nukes concert was held at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Performers included Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Poco, Tom Petty, Carly Simon, James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen.

2004 The Guinness World Records released figures that showed that Status Quo have had more hit singles on the UK chart than any other band history. The group made the chart 61 times, dating from "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in 1968 to "You'll Come Around" in 2004. Queen was second with 52 hits, while The Rolling Stones and UB40 had 51 hits each.

1940 Blue-eyed soul singer Bill Medley (of The Righteous Brothers) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1943 Cass Elliot (of The Mamas & The Papas) is born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, Maryland.

1958 Lita Ford is born in London. She joins the all-female rock group The Runaways as a teenager and has a hit with "Kiss Me Deadly" in 1988.

1973 Country rock singer, songwriter 26-year-old Gram Parsons formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, died under mysterious conditions in Joshua Tree, California. His death was attributed to heart failure but later was officially announced as a drug overdose. His coffin was stolen by two of his associates, manager Phil Kaufman and Michael Martin, a former roadie for The Byrds, and was taken to Cap Rock in the California desert, where it was set alight, in accordance to Parson's wishes. The two were later arrested by police.
