1978 - U2 opened for the Stranglers in Dublin at the Top Hat Ballroom.

1987 - Pink Floyd began their "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" tour. It was the band's first tour without Roger Waters.

1996 - The Metallica single "Hero of the Day" was released.

2004 - Guitar maker Ernie Ball died after a long illness. In the late 1950s in Tarzana, Calif., Ball opened a guitars-only music store — unusual for the time. Ball developed the guitar strings called "Slinkys," which are specifically designed for rock 'n' roll electric guitar.

This Day In Rock History: Sept 10th


1966 The Rolling Stones appear on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York. Guitarist Brian Jones performs despite a cast on his right hand which he broke in a fall in Tangier.

1972 Making a valiant effort to soldier on in the wake of Jim Morrison's death last July 3rd, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Densmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger played their last concert as The Doors at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Their final song is "Light My Fire", which was also the last song Morrison ever performed with the band.

1942 Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night is born in Buncrana, Donegal, Ireland.

1945 José Feliciano is born José Montserrate Feliciano García in Lares, Puerto Rico. Known for the Christmas classic "Feliz Navidad."

1946 Don Powell (drummer for Slade) is born in Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He would become interested in drums as a Boy Scout.

1949 Barriemore Barlow (drummer/percussionist for Jethro Tull) is born in Birmingham, England

1950 Joe Perry (lead guitarist for Aerosmith) is born Anthony Joseph Perry in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

1962 The BBC bans Bobby "Boris" Pickett's Halloween novelty single "Monster Mash," finding it in poor taste. However, in 1973 the radio giant lifts the ban, sending a re-release of the holiday favorite to #3.

1996 Neil Peart employs some jazz-influenced traditional drum grips on Rush's 16th studio album, Test for Echo. It's the last album the band releases before the death of Peart's daughter, followed ten months later by the passing of his wife, leads the band to take a six-year recording hiatus.

1966 Buckcherry guitarist Stevie D., Fastball guitarist/vocalist Miles Zuniga and Bush drummer Robin Goodridge share a birthday.

1988 A good day for Rock singles. Guns N' Roses hold the #1 spot with "Sweet Child O' Mine," a song inspired by Erin Everly, briefly Axl Rose's wife and daughter of Don Everly (Everly Brothers). The #2 position has Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" while Van Halen's "When It's Love" is #5.

1991, Nirvana’s single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was released in the US. The unexpected success of the song in late 1991 propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts at the start of 1992, an event often marked as the point where alternative rock entered the mainstream.
