1951 Johnny Graham (multi-instrumentalist of Earth, Wind & Fire) is born in Louisville, Kentucky.

1953 Ian Bairnson (guitarist for Pilot, The Alan Parsons Project) is born in Lerwick, Shetland Isles, Scotland.

1961 Randy Scruggs (of The Stray Cats) is born in Nashville, Tennessee.

1963 James Hetfield (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist for Metallica) is born in Downey, California.

1968, The two day Newport Pop Festival took place in Costa Mesa, California with Alice Cooper, Canned Heat, Chambers Brothers, Charles Lloyd Quartet, Country Joe and the Fish, Electric Flag, James Cotton Blues Band, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sonny & Cher, Steppenwolf and Tiny Tim. Over 100,000 fans attended the festival.

1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album Hysteria which became their best selling album to date, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. The title of the album was thought up by drummer Rick Allen relating to his experiences during the time of his car accident, and the worldwide media coverage that followed.

2007 Queen guitarist Brian May handed in his astronomy PhD thesis at Imperial College, London — 36 years after abandoning it to join the band. May graduated on May 14, 2008, making him Dr. Brian May. He remains active in astronomy as a Visiting Researcher at Imperial College and through his involvement with the Imperial Astrophysics Group.

1971: A group calling themselves Teen King and The Emergencies played at a club called The Gallery in Aspen, Colorado. Following another show at Tulagi’s in Boulder, the band renamed themselves Eagles before recording their debut album in early 1972.

1974: After Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan decided to quit touring and concentrate on writing and recording in the studio, guitarist Jeff Baxter left the group to join the Doobie Brothers. Afterwards, drummer Jeff Porcaro and vocalist and keyboardist Michael McDonald briefly joined Steely Dan. Porcaro soon after left to co-found Toto and McDonald left to also joined the Doobie Brothers. Becker and Fagen subsequently recruited a diverse group of session players for their next album, Katy Lied.

2000 - Coyote Ugly, about an aspiring singer-songwriter (Piper Perabo) who takes a job at a bawdy bar, opens in theaters. LeAnn Rimes, who appears in the film, anchors the soundtrack with four new songs, including the theme, "Can't Fight The Moonlight." It's one of the best-selling soundtracks of the '00s.

2007 - Singer/songwriter Lee Hazlewood died of cancer at age 78. Hazlewood wrote and produced many of Nancy Sinatra's most famous hits, including "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'", "Jackson" and "Did You Ever".

1958 - Billboard Magazine introduced its "Hot 100" chart, which was part popularity and a barometer of the movement of potential hits. The first number one song was Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool."

1966 - The Temptations' "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" was released.

1987 - The soundtrack "Dirty Dancing" was released.

2006 John Locke (keyboardist for Nazareth, Spirit) dies of cancer at age 62.

1968, The second day of the two day Newport Pop Festival took place in Costa Mesa, California with Blue Cheer, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Grateful Dead, Illinois Speed Press, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Byrds. Over 100,000 fans attended the festival.

1984, Prince started a 24 week run at the top of the US album charts with 'Purple Rain'. His sixth studio album which features the hits 'When Doves Cry' and 'Let's Go Crazy', as well as the title track has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, becoming the seventh best-selling soundtrack album of all time.

1996, Oasis played two sold out nights at Balloch Castle Country Park, Loch Lomand, Scotland to over 80,000 fans. Oasis roadie James Hunter was crushed to death between a fork-lift truck and a lorry during the bands two days shows.
