2003 Johnny Cash picked up six nominations in the MTV Video Music Awards for his remake of Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt' from his album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. The video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was also named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and CMA Awards, and the best video of all time by NME.

Today in 1982, Survivor started a six-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Eye Of The Tiger," taken from the film Rocky III. The song was written by Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik, and was recorded at the request of Sylvester Stallone, after Queen denied him permission to use "Another One Bites the Dust". Fun fact: "Eye of the Tiger" was originally made for the movie The Karate Kid, as the director of both Rocky and The Karate Kid, John G. Avildsen, planned to use the song for a fighting montage towards the end of the feature. Avildsen opted to use "You're the Best" by Joe Esposito for the montage instead. What a journey!

1972 Bobby Ramirez, the 24-year-old drummer with Edgar Winter's White Trash, is beaten to death in a Chicago barroom brawl after a patron complains about the length of Ramirez's hair.

1982: John Mellencamp, then as John Cougar, released “Jack and Diane,” the second single from his fifth studio album, American Fool. The song spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is Mellencamp’s most successful hit single.

1990: California band Dread Zeppelin released their debut studio album, Un-Led-Ed, in which they perform reggae covers of Led Zeppelin songs. The album was publicly endorsed by Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant, who claimed he preferred their version of “Your Time Is Gonna Come.”

1980 AC/DC released "Back In Black." It was their first album with Brian Johnson as lead singer.

2020 - English blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Peter Green died in his sleep age 73. As the founder of Fleetwood Mac, his songs, such as 'Albatross', 'Black Magic Woman', 'Oh Well', 'The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)' and 'Man of the World' became worldwide hits. Green left the band in 1970 as he struggled with his mental health.

1969, Neil Young appeared with Crosby, Stills and Nash for the first time when they played at The Fillmore East in New York. Young was initially asked to help out with live material only, but ended up joining the group on and off for the next 30 years.

1969, The Seattle Pop Festival took place at the Gold Creek Park, Woodinville, Washington. Acts who appeared over three days included, Chuck Berry, Tim Buckley, The Byrds, Chicago Transit Authority, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, The Doors, The Flock, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Guess Who, It’s A Beautiful Day, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Spirit, Ten Years After, Ike & Tina Turner, Vanilla Fudge, Alice Cooper and The Youngbloods.

1941 Guitarist Manny Charlton (of Nazareth) is born in La Linea, Spain.

1943 Drummer Jim McCarty (of The Yardbirds and Renaissance) is born in Walton, Liverpool, England.

1946 Jose "Chepito" Areas (of Santana) is born in Leon, Nicaragua.

1969 Yes release their self-titled debut album, one of the first in the progressive rock genre.
