1937 Don Everly (of The Everly Brothers) is born Isaac Donald Everly in Brownie, Kentucky. Two years later, brother Phil is born.
1938 Jimmy Carl Black (drummer, vocalist for Mothers of Invention) is born James Carl Inkanish, Jr. in El Paso, Texas.
1949 RCA introduces the 45 RPM record. It's 7 inches wide and plays at a faster speed than the traditional 33-1/3, providing better sound quality. The format takes off, and 45s become known as "singles."
1950 Mike Campbell (lead guitarist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) is born in Panama City, Florida.
1951 Rich Williams (guitarist for Kansas) is born in Topeka, Kansas.
1964 Jani Lane of Warrant ("Cherry Pie") is born in Akron, Ohio.
1969 Patrick Wilson (drummer for Weezer) is born in Buffalo, New York. He starts drum lessons at age 15 after seeing Van Halen in concert.

1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases Gimme Back My Bullets. It's their fourth album, following Nuthin' Fancy and preceding Street Survivors, which is their last release before a fatal plane crash ends the original lineup.

1973, Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer injured his hands when his piano rigged to explode as a stunt, detonated prematurely during a concert in San Francisco.
2004, TV network CBS apologised for its broadcast of the American Super Bowl after Janet Jackson was left exposed when Justin Timberlake ripped her top. The pair had been performing a raunchy half-time duet when one of Jackson's breasts was exposed as Timberlake pulled at her top. CBS quickly cut away from the scene but was still flooded with calls from angry viewers about the half-time entertainment, produced by MTV. Timberlake insisted it had been an accident saying "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the half-time performance of the Super Bowl."

1959 February 3rd, 1959 was for many, "the day the music died", when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were all killed. Their plane took off a little after 1 AM from Clear Lake, Iowa, when a cold North-East wind gave way to a blinding snow storm which drastically reduced visibility. Encased in a sea of snow with only white below, pilot Roger Peterson seemed to become disoriented and flew the plane into the ground. One wing hit the frozen earth and the small plane tumbled over and over, killing the three musicians and the plane's young pilot.
