This Day In Rock History: January 29th


1986 Allen Collins of the southern Rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of his girlfriend, Debra Jean Watts. The crash paralyzed him from the waist down, leaving him with limited use of his arms and hands, and he would never play guitar on stage again as a result of his injuries. He would later plead no contest to vehicular manslaughter as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. As part of his plea bargain, Collins would address fans at every Skynyrd concert with an explanation of why he could not perform, citing the dangers of drinking and driving. Collins would die on January 23, 1990, from chronic pneumonia, a complication of the paralysis.

1947 Steve Marriott (frontman of The Small Faces, Humble Pie) is born in Manor Park, London, England.

1951 Phil Collins is born in Chiswick, London, England. Before embarking on a solo career in 1980, he is the drummer and lead singer for Genesis.

1969 Led Zeppelin played the first of two nights at The Fillmore East, New York City during the band's first North American tour. Porter's Popular Preachers opened the night, then Led Zeppelin took the stage. It is alleged that Zeppelin's show was so powerful and got such an enthusiastic audience that headliners Iron Butterfly refused to follow them.

2017 English singer, bassist, and songwriter John Wetton died in his sleep at his home in Bournemouth, Dorset, UK from colon cancer. He rose to fame with bands Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, and Wishbone Ash. After his period with King Crimson, Wetton formed UK, and later he was the frontman and principal songwriter of the supergroup Asia. Their biggest hit 'Heat of the Moment', reached No. 4 in the US in 1982.

1946 Terry Kath, co-founder and guitarist of (Chicago), is born in Chicago, Illinois.

2009 Dewey Martin (drummer for Buffalo Springfield) dies at age 68. The cause of death is unknown, but he had been suffering from health problems for the last few years.
