This Day In Rock History: September 23rd

1957 Buddy Holly and the Crickets went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "That'll Be The Day." The title of the song was inspired by a catchphrase that John Wayne uttered repeatedly in the famous John Ford film, The Searchers.

1967 "People Are Strange" by The Doors was released. Meanwhile, The Box Tops began a four-week run at No. 1 with "The Letter."

2019 Robert Hunter, Grateful Dead lyricist died at the age of 78. He provided the Grateful Dead with many of their vivid and enduring lyrics for some of the band's signature songs, including 'Uncle John's Band', 'Scarlet Begonias' and 'Dark Star.'

Today in 1991, Nirvana released their epic Nevermind, making today the 30th anniversary of the release. The album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide to date. By January 1992, it reached number one on the US Billboard 200; during this time it was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week. The album produced several successful singles including "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". The album was ranked number 17 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list, and upgrading to number 6 in 2020 revised list. Produced by Butch Vig, it was the first Nirvana album to feature drummer Dave Grohl. In addition, it was responsible in part for bringing both grunge and alternative rock music to a mainstream audience and ending the dominance of hair metal.

1972 Black Sabbath released their fourth studio album, 'Black Sabbath Vol. 4'. The album which features a monochrome photograph of Ozzy Osbourne with hands raised, taken during a Black Sabbath concert was originally to be titled 'Snowblind', after one of several songs referring to the band's cocaine use.

1980 John Bonham, drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. ‘Bonzo’ was found dead at guitarists Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, ‘Moby Dick,’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands. In 2007, Ludwig issued a limited edition drum kit in Bonham's memory.

1999 Stephen Canaday of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils was killed when the vintage WW II plane he was flying in, rolled, inverted and crashed into a tree. The pilot failed to maintain speed which resulted in a stall.

1965 A former member of The New Christy Minstrels, Barry McGuire led the US hit parade with "Eve Of Destruction". The controversial doom and gloom theme of the record was enough to have it banned from airplay by some American radio stations. The backing musicians on the track were members of The Wrecking Crew, P. F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The song was offered to The Byrds, but they rejected it, and The Turtles recorded a version instead. Their rendition was issued as a track on their 1965 debut album "It Ain't Me Babe", shortly before McGuire's version was cut. McGuire recalled in later years that "Eve of Destruction" had been recorded in one take on a Thursday morning, reading lyrics scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper. The following Monday he got a phone call from the record company at 7:00 am, telling him to turn on the radio, his song was playing.
