This Day In Rock History: June 15th


2014 82-year-old Casey Kasem, the host of US radio shows like American Top 40 and Casey's Countdown for nearly 40 years, died after battling Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1981 and was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters' Hall of Fame in 1985.

1949 Peppy Castro (guitarist, vocalist for Blues Magoos) is born.

1954 Garry Roberts (lead guitarist for The Boomtown Rats) is born in Dublin, Ireland.

1972 David Bowie unveils his landmark album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. His breakthrough LP, it sells over 7 million copies and is hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.

1997 John Wolters (drummer for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show) dies of cancer at age 52.

2010 Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax play on the same bill, marking the first time the "Big Four" of thrash metal do a show together.

1967 - The three day Monterey Pop Festival in California began. All the proceeds went to charity when all the artists agreed to perform for free, the 'Summer of Love' was born. The festival saw the first major US appearances by The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Also on the bill: The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Otis Redding, Simon & Garfunkel, The Steve Miller Band, Canned Heat, The Mamas And The Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield and The Electric Flag. John Phillips, of The Mamas and The Papas wrote, 'San Francisco, (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)' to promote the festival, which later became a hit for Scott McKenzie.

1970 Mungo Jerry were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'In The Summertime'. It went on to become the best selling UK single of 1970 spending seven weeks at No.1 and was a hit in 26 other countries. The UK release was a ****-single playing at 33 rpm, (whereas singles generally played at 45 rpm).

1999 - Screaming Lord Sutch was found dead after hanging himself. The singer turned politician was 58. He was the first long-haired pop star-boasting hair over 18 inches long and the self-styled lord (real name David Sutch), was Britain's longest-serving political leader, standing in nearly 40 elections.

1972 Grateful Dead keyboard player and founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan played his last show with the band at a Hollywood Bowl concert. Health problems forced him to stop touring, and he died in March, 1973 at age 27.

1995 Rod Stewart set an attendance record at Wembley Stadium in London when 83,000 fans attend his concert. The record held until 2009, when U2 draws 88,000 on their 360 tour.

2012 Bruce Springsteen played his longest show when he turned in a three-hour-and-48-minute, 32-song set at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

1942 Carl Radle (bass player for Derek and the Dominos) is born in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1942 Paul McCartney is born James Paul McCartney in Allerton, Liverpool, England.

1963 Darren "Dizzy" Reed (keyboardist of Guns N' Roses) is born in Hinsdale, Illinois.

2011 Clarence Clemons, saxophone player in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, dies at age 69 after suffering a s.t.r.o.k.e. He is replaced in the band by his nephew, Jake Clemons.

This Day In Rock History: June 18th


2007 American singer and record producer Hank Medress died of lung cancer at 68. He was the vocalist on The Tokens 1961 US No.1 hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', Medress was also in the vocal quartet The Linc-Tones with Neil Sedaka and produced the hit single 'He's So Fine' by The Chiffons, as well as Tony Orlando's 'Knock Three Times'.
