2003 Singer-songwriter Maurice Gibb from The Bee Gees died aged 53 in Miami Hospital, Florida following a heart attack during abdominal surgery. The Bee Gees released over 20 albums and had the 1979 world-wide No.1 album 'Spirits Having Flown', and 'How Deep Is Your Love, 'Stayin' Alive', and 'Night Fever' from the soundtrack 'Saturday Night Fever' were all US No.1 singles. Gibb was married to the Scottish singer Lulu from 1969 to 1973. In 2002, Maurice was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), along with his brothers.

2022 Ronnie Spector, lead vocalist for The Ronettes, passed away at the age of 78 after a brief battle with cancer. Her group placed five songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1963 and 1964, including "Be My Baby" (#2), "Baby I Love You" (#24), "The Best Part Of Breakin' Up" (#39), "Do I Love You?" (#34) and "Walking In The Rain" (#23). Her ex-husband, Phil Spector died of complications of COVID-19, on January 16, 2021 at the age of 81.

1954 Trevor Rabin (guitarist for Yes) is born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Rabin is also a noted film composer with over 40 scores to his credit, including Remember the Titans (2002) and National Treasure (2004).

1968 Against the advice of Columbia Records executives, Johnny Cash visits Folsom State Prison in California to record a live album. The resulting LP, "Live At Folsom Prison" would become one of Johnny's biggest selling records, reaching #1 on the Country album chart and #13 on the Hot 200. It also produced one of his most memorable hit singles, "Folsom Prison Blues". In 2003, "Live At Folsom Prison" was certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over three million and was ranked #88 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

2011 Tommy Crain, guitarist for The Charlie Daniels Band on their Grammy-winning single "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and more than twenty albums, died in his sleep at the age of 59.

2021 Tim Bogert, a bassist for Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and Beck, Bogert & Appice, died of cancer at the age of 76.

1967 Over 25,000 people attend The Human Be-In-A Gathering Of The Tribes at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The event was a forerunner of major, outdoor rock concerts and featured Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother And The Holding Company.

1978 An L.A. group called Player had the top tune in the US with "Baby Come Back". The song was written by band members Peter Beckett and John Crowley after both had broken up with their respective girl friends. The song reached #32 in the UK.

1996 Ruby Starr, vocalist for Black Oak Arkansas on their 1974 hit "Jim Dandy" as well as having her own solo career, died of cancer at the age of 45.

2020 Steve Martin Caro, vocalist for The Left Banke on their hits, "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina", died of heart disease at the age of 71. Originally known as Steve Martin, he added the family surname Caro in the 1980s to avoid confusion with the comedian of the same name.
