2003 Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers was found dead in hotel room in Michigan 30 minutes before he was due on stage, aged 63. The autopsy report from the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner gave the opinion that Hatfield suffered a sudden, unexpected death due to acute cocaine toxicity. The Righteous Brothers had the 1965 UK & US No.1 single 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', and the 1990 UK No.1 single 'Unchained Melody' first released in 1965.

2014 The funeral for Jack Bruce was held in London, attended by Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and noted musicians Phil Manzanera, Gary Brooker, Vernon Reid and Nitin Sawhney among others. Dozens assembled at the Golders Green Crematorium paying a last tribute singing "Morning Has Broken", "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Theme for an Imaginary Western". The Scottish-born bass player and singer had died last month as a result of liver disease.

1946 Gram Parsons (of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers) is born Ingram Cecil Connor III in his mom's hometown of Winter Haven, Florida, but will reside in Waycross, Georgia.

1947 Peter Noone is born in Davyhulme, Manchester, England. He becomes lead singer of Herman's Hermits.

1948 Peter Hammill (lead vocalist for Van Der Graaf Generator) is born in Ealing, London, England.

1948 Don McDougall (guitarist for The Guess Who) is born in Canada.

1970 Led Zeppelin releases "Immigrant Song."

1996 Johnny Cash releases Unchained, his second album produced by Rick Rubin. He's backed by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and covers their song "Southern Accents."

1946 George Young (rhythm guitarist, songwriter for The Easybeats) is born in Glasgow, Scotland.

1948 Glenn Frey is born in Detroit, Michigan. After moving to Los Angeles, he forms the Eagles with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

1995 Queen release Made In Heaven, an album pieced together from recordings made before Freddie Mercury's 1991 death. It debuts at #1 in the UK.

2017 Finnish rock drummer Pentti Glan died of lung cancer at the age of 71. He is best known for his work with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed. He also appeared in the movie The Rose as the drummer of The Rose Band.

1942 Rock singer Johnny Rivers is born John Henry Ramistella in New York City but shortly moves to Baton Rouge, where he is influenced by the Louisiana music scene.

1943 Joni Mitchell is born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.

1967 The radio station KSHE 94.7 FM in St. Louis flips format from easy listening to rock, starting with "White Rabbit." The move helps spread the sounds and ethos of the counterculture to the midwest, and KSHE becomes a major force in the movement

1969 Pink Floyd release their third album, Ummagumma, in the UK. Tracks include "Astronomy Domine" and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene."
