1944 Mick Avory (drummer for The Kinks) is born in Surrey, England.

1945 John Helliwell (saxophonist for Supertramp) is born in Todmorden, Yorkshire, England.

1947 David Brown (bassist for Santana) is born in Daly City, California.

1967 Music students at Chicago's DePaul University form a seven-piece rock ensemble called The Big Thing. Later, they would change their name to Chicago Transit Authority, and then, simply, Chicago.

1969: The Doors peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Touch Me” which was their third and final top ten single in the U.S.

1975: Rush released their sophomore album Fly by Night which was their first album with Neil Peart on drums.

This Day In Rock History: February 16th


2004 Doris Troy, the big voiced singer of the 1963 #10 hit "Just One Look", died of emphysema at the age of 67. She was working as an usherette at the Apollo Theatre when she was discovered by James Brown and went on to work with The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Dusty Springfield, Nick Drake and Carly Simon.

2015 Leslie Gore, who placed eleven songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1963 and 1967, including "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry", She's A Fool" and "You Don't Own Me", died of cancer at the age of 68.

2018 Barbara Ann Alston, vocalist for The Crystals on their hits "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Then He Kissed Me" and "There's No Other Like My Baby", died at the age of 74 after contracting influenza.

1935 Sonny Bono is born in Detroit. He finds success as a producer and record executive before marrying Cher, with whom he forms the duo Sonny & Cher. He is elected to Congress in California, where he serves until the time of his death.

1993 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases The Last Rebel, the band's seventh album, on which Kurt Custer appears for his first time and guitarist Randall Hall for his last.

2013 Guitarist Stanley "Goober Grin" Knight (of Black Oak Arkansas) dies of cancer at age 64.

This Day In Rock History: February 17th


1973 The Rock ensemble Free, who reached #2 in the UK and #4 in the US in 1970 with "All Right Now", play their final show at Florida's Hollywood Sportatorium. Vocalist Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke will move on to form Bad Company.

1976 The Eagles release their "Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" album. To this day, it is still one of the best selling records of all time.

2008 Little Richard got a standing ovation from a crowd of 2,400 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville without playing a single note. The 75 year old Rock 'n Roll pioneer was seated at the rear of the auditorium during a concert by The Temptations and The Four Tops when he was introduced by The Temp's Otis Williams.

2014 Devo guitarist Bob Casale died of heart failure at the age of 61. The band had a string of New Wave hits, including "Whip It" and "Girl U Want".

1950 Rickey Medlocke, Lynyrd Skynyrd member and frontman of the band Blackfoot, is born in Jacksonville, Florida. He is inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame in 2008.'

1969: Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan had a recording session together in Nashville at CBS Studios. The only song released from the sessions was “Girl from the North Country” which appeared on Dylan’s Nashville Skyline album.
