1976 The Band's final concert, called The Last Waltz, was performed at San Francisco's Winterland. It included appearances by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins and Neil Diamond.

1967: The Who peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “I Can See for Miles” which was their first and only top ten single in the U.S.

1984: Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Sting & U2 were among some of the artists who participated in the recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” for Band Aid at S.A.R.M. studios in London, a project spearheaded by Bob Geldof after viewing a documentary on the famine in Ethiopia.

1939 Tina Turner is born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee.

1945 John McVie (bass guitarist for Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) is born in Ealing, London, England.

1946 Bert Ruiter (bass guitarist for Focus) is born in Amsterdam.

1948 Gayle McCormick (lead singer for Smith) is born in St. Louis, Missouri. Smith was known for the 1969 hit cover of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You."

1965 After cleaning a church in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where they had Thanksgiving dinner the day before, Arlo Guthrie and a friend clean up the place, but toss the trash down a hill when they can't find an open dump. They are arrested, fined $25 each, and forced to pick up the garbage. When they return to the church, Guthrie writes "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" about the incident, embellishing some details.

This Day In Rock History: November 27th


1967 The 16-date UK package tourwith Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Move, The Nice, The Outer Limits, The Eire Apparent and Amen Corner travelled to Belfast to appear for two shows at the Whitla Hall, Queens College. It was Jimi's 25th birthday and before the shows the guitarist was given a birthday cake by the promoters This was to be the only concert that The Jimi Hendrix Experience ever played in Ireland.

1991 Freddie Mercury's funeral service was conducted by a Zoroastrian priest, for 35 of his close friends and family, with Elton John and the remaining members of Queen among those in attendance. Mercury was cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery, West London, England.

1997 A disturbed rock fan brought the funeral of INXS singer Michael Hutchence to a standstill when he tried to launch himself from a 20 ft high balcony with a cord around his neck. He was removed by police and taken away to a psychiatric unit.

1945 Randy Brecker (trumpeter, flugelhornist for Blood, Sweat & Tears) is born in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.

1948 Dave Winthrop (sax player and flautist for Supertramp) is born.

1962 Charlie Benante (drummer for Anthrax) is born in The Bronx, New York.
