    2017 Finnish rock drummer Pentti Glan died of lung cancer at the age of 71. He is best known for his work with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed. He also appeared in the movie The Rose as the drummer of The Rose Band.

    1942 Rock singer Johnny Rivers is born John Henry Ramistella in New York City but shortly moves to Baton Rouge, where he is influenced by the Louisiana music scene.

    1943 Joni Mitchell is born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.

    1967 The radio station KSHE 94.7 FM in St. Louis flips format from easy listening to rock, starting with "White Rabbit." The move helps spread the sounds and ethos of the counterculture to the midwest, and KSHE becomes a major force in the movement

    1969 Pink Floyd release their third album, Ummagumma, in the UK. Tracks include "Astronomy Domine" and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene."

    1969 After Life magazine tracks down Paul McCartney at his farm in Scotland, they put him on the cover with his family, dispelling the "Paul is dead" rumors with the headline, "Paul Is Still With Us."

    1968 The Who, Joe Cocker and The Grease Band, The Mindbenders and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown all appeared at The Walthamstow Granada Theatre, England.

    1971 Led Zeppelin released their fourth album. With no title printed on the album, and generally referred to as Four Symbols, The Fourth Album or Led Zeppelin IV it has gone on to sell over 37 million copies worldwide. The 19th century rustic oil painting on the front of the album was purchased by Robert Plant from an antique shop in Reading, Berkshire, England. The 20th century urban tower block on the back of the full gatefold LP cover is Butterfield Court in Eves Hill, Dudley, England.

    1945 Don Murray (drummer for The Turtles) is born in Inglewood, California.

    1946 Roy Wood of The Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard is born in Kitts Green, Birmingham, England.

    1949 Bonnie Raitt is born in Burbank, California.

    1986 At the Country Club in Los Angeles, California, Metallica play their first show with bassist Jason Newsted, the replacement for Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tour bus accident in September.

    1971 Led Zeppelin IV - the one with "Stairway To Heaven" - is released.

    “Ace Of Spades, the fourth studio album by Motorhead, is released. Containing the classic title track it’s the band’s U.S. debut set. 1980

    National Geographic announces that a species of frog that sounds like a bat has been named after Ozzy Osbourne. The frog, who lives in the Brazilian Amazon, is named Dendropsophus ozzyi by the scientists who discovered it. 2014
