1937 Don Everly (of The Everly Brothers) is born Isaac Donald Everly in Brownie, Kentucky. Two years later, brother Phil is born.

1938 Jimmy Carl Black (drummer, vocalist for Mothers of Invention) is born James Carl Inkanish, Jr. in El Paso, Texas.

1949 RCA introduces the 45 RPM record. It's 7 inches wide and plays at a faster speed than the traditional 33-1/3, providing better sound quality. The format takes off, and 45s become known as "singles."

1950 Mike Campbell (lead guitarist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) is born in Panama City, Florida.

1951 Rich Williams (guitarist for Kansas) is born in Topeka, Kansas.

1964 Jani Lane of Warrant ("Cherry Pie") is born in Akron, Ohio.

1969 Patrick Wilson (drummer for Weezer) is born in Buffalo, New York. He starts drum lessons at age 15 after seeing Van Halen in concert.

1973, Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer injured his hands when his piano rigged to explode as a stunt, detonated prematurely during a concert in San Francisco.

1976, Genesis released 'A Trick Of The Tail', their seventh studio album and the first to feature drummer Phil Collins as full-time lead vocalist following the departure of original vocalist Peter Gabriel. After auditioning over 400 vocalists, which saw Collins teaching the potential lead singers the songs, the band decided that Collins should be the new vocalist.

2004, TV network CBS apologised for its broadcast of the American Super Bowl after Janet Jackson was left exposed when Justin Timberlake ripped her top. The pair had been performing a raunchy half-time duet when one of Jackson's breasts was exposed as Timberlake pulled at her top. CBS quickly cut away from the scene but was still flooded with calls from angry viewers about the half-time entertainment, produced by MTV. Timberlake insisted it had been an accident saying "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the half-time performance of the Super Bowl."

2014, Skinny Puppy sent the US government an invoice after finding out their music was used as torture device in Guantanamo Bay. Despite the band's aggressive sound, they said they had never envisioned their music being used in such a way. Asked how they felt about their songs allegedly being used in the detention camp, singer cEvin Key replied: "Not too good. We never supported those types of scenarios. … Because we make unsettling music, we can see it being used in a weird way. But it doesn’t sit right with us."

1942 Graham Nash (of The Hollies, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) is born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.

1949 Ross Valory, bass player with Journey and the Steve Miller Band, is born in San Francisco.

1959 At the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper play their last show as part of the "Winter Dance Party" tour. Admission: $1.25. The last song of the night: The Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace."

1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases Gimme Back My Bullets. It's their fourth album, following Nuthin' Fancy and preceding Street Survivors, which is their last release before a fatal plane crash ends the original lineup.

1979: Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York City. He was 21 years old.

2007: Van Halen announced that David Lee Roth would be rejoining them as their singer for a reunion tour which kicked off in September of that year. It was also announced that Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang would be replacing Michael Anthony as their bassist.

1959, 22 year old Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off from Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tour bus. All three were travelling to Fargo, North Dakota, for the next show on their Winter Dance Party Tour which Holly had set - covering 24 cities in three weeks, to make money after the break-up of his band, The Crickets, last year.

1978 The TV movie Dead Man's Curve, which was based on the lives of Jan And Dean, airs on ABC. The film features cameo appearances by Dick Clark, Wolfman Jack, and Beach Boys' Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. Jan Berry himself and his parents appear in the audience at the end of the movie.

1947 Dave Davies (lead guitarist for The Kinks) is born in Fortis Green, London, England.

1949 Arthur Kane (bass guitarist for New York Dolls) is born in The Bronx, New York City.

1979 20 years after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Del Shannon and The Drifters perform a tribute show in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Holly's last concert took place.
