1945, Born on this day, Lemmy, English musician, singer, and songwriter who founded and fronted the rock band Motorhead. Lemmy played in several rock groups in the 1960s, including the Rockin' Vickers and worked as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix and the Nice, before joining the space rock band Hawkwind in 1971, singing lead on their hit 'Silver Machine'. He died on 28 December 2015 following a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer.

2016, Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt died in hospital in Marbella, Spain aged 68. He died from a severe infection after going to hospital, following complications to a shoulder injury. His partnership with Francis Rossi became the core of Status Quo, one of Britain's most enduring bands. Status Quo had over 60 chart hits in the UK, more than any other rock band, including "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in 1967, "Whatever You Want" in 1979 and "In the Army Now" in 2010. Twenty-two of these reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. In July 1985 the band opened Live Aid at Wembley Stadium with "Rockin' All Over the World".

1957 Ian Burden (keyboardist, bass guitarist for The Human League) is born in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England.

1974 James Taylor, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell go Christmas carolling in Hollywood.

1992 Bobby LaKind (conga player for The Doobie Brothers) dies of colon cancer in Los Angeles, California, at age 47.

2000 Nick Massi (of The Four Seasons) dies of cancer in West Orange, New Jersey, at age 73.

2009 Larry Knechtel, the keyboard player for Bread, died following a heart attack at the age of 69. Knechtel earned a Grammy award for his arrangement of Simon And Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and also performed with Neil Diamond, Randy Newman, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams Jr., The Dixie Chicks and Elvis Costello.

2006, James Brown the ‘Godfather of Soul’, died at the age of 73 after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Brown went to his dentist in Atlanta the previous day who told him something was wrong, and sent him to a doctor immediately. His hits included ‘Papa's Got a Brand New Bag’, ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’, and ‘Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine, Pt. 1’. Brown was married four times, at the age of 16, was arrested for theft and served 3 years in prison. In 1988, Brown was arrested following a high-speed car chase along the Georgia-South Carolina state border.

2009, Tony Bellamy guitarist, pianist and vocalist for the Native American rock band Redbone died of liver failure. Redbone had the 1971 UK No.2 & US No.21 single 'The Witch Queen Of New Orleans and the 1974 US No. 4 hit single, 'Come and Get Your Love.' Redbone are accredited in the NY Smithsonian as the first Native American rock/Cajun group to have a No.1 single in the United States and internationally. Bellamy had performed with Dobie Gray, and was a member of Peter and the Wolves (a band from San Francisco that evolved into the psychedelic band Moby Grape).

2016, George Michael died at his home aged 53. Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT. The singer who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, was said to have "passed away peacefully at home". Up to the time of his death, Michael sold more than 115 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

1954 Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" enters the Billboard Pop chart for the first time, seven years after it was recorded. According to Guinness World Records, Bing's rendition has sold over 100 million copies around the world, with at least 50 million sales as singles. It was the largest selling single in the US and the UK until it was surpassed by Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997". (Princess Diana version)

1995 Dean Martin, who recorded such standards as "Memories Are Made of This" (#1 in 1955), "Return To Me" (#4 in 1958) and "Everybody Loves Somebody" (#1 in 1964), died of acute respiratory failure on Christmas morning at the age of 78. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer two years earlier. During his career Dean recorded over 100 albums and placed 17 songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1955 and 1967. He also starred in a popular TV variety show that ran from 1965 to 1974 for 264 episodes. Although estranged for many years, his former partner, Jerry Lewis would be quoted in later years as saying, "I wish he were here. He was a miracle that God put in my life and working with him was a feeling I'll never ever forget. There isn't a day I don't think about him."

1937 O'Kelly Isley Jr. (the eldest of The Isley Brothers) is born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1943 Guitarist Trevor Lucas (of Fairport Convention) is born in Bungaree, Victoria, Australia. He learns to play the guitar to help with his dyslexia.

1944 John Edwards (lead singer of The Spinners) is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1944 Henry Vestine aka The Sunflower (guitarist for Canned Heat) is born in Takoma Park, Maryland.

1945 Noel Redding (bassist for The Jimi Hendrix Experience) is born David Noel Redding in Folkestone, Kent, England.

1946 Jimmy Buffett is born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, but would be raised in Mobile, Alabama.

1948 Merry Clayton (named for Christmas) is born in New Orleans. A backup singer by trade, she is most famous for her incendiary vocal alongside Mick Jagger on "Gimme Shelter." She would later appear on the Coldplay song "Up & Up."

1957 Shane MacGowan (lead singer-songwriter for The Pogues) is born in Pembury, Kent, England, to Irish parents.

1971 Noel Hogan (guitarist for The Cranberries) is born in Moyross, Limerick, England. He writes most of the music for their songs, with Dolores O'Riordan adding the lyrics.

1946 Bob Carpenter (keyboardist, accordionist for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1951 Paul Quinn (guitarist for Saxon) is born in Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire, England.

1963 Lars Ulrich (drummer for Metallica) is born in Gentofte, Denmark. He becomes interested in music after seeing Deep Purple in concert at age 9.

1969 Peter Klett (lead guitarist for Candlebox) is born in Bellevue, Washington.

1983, Walter Scott lead singer of Bob Kuban & The In-Men, who scored a 1966 US hit with ‘The Cheater’, was seen alive for the last time. On April 10th, 1987, his badly decomposed, bound body was found floating face down in a cistern, he’d been shot in the back. Scott's second wife, Jo Ann Calceterra, pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution in his murder and received a five-year sentence. Her boyfriend (whom she married in 1986), James H. Williams Sr. was found guilty of two counts of capital murder in the deaths of Walter Scott as well as his previous wife, Sharon Williams. James Williams received two life terms.

2008, Singer, songwriter, guitarist, Delaney Bramlett died in Los Angeles from complications after gall bladder surgery. Was a member of Delaney, Bonnie & Friends and worked with George Harrison, The Everly Brothers, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, J.J. Cale, and Eric Clapton.
