This Day In Rock History: Dec 12th



1970: The Doors performed their final concert with their original lineup at The Warehouse in New Orleans.

1974: After being in the group for five and a half years, Mick Taylor announced his departure from The Rolling Stones.

2003: Mick Jagger was knighted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. Jagger brought his 92 year old father Joe to attend the ceremony.

1975, Patti Smith released her debut studio album Horses. Produced by John Cale, Horses has since been viewed by critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums in the history of the American punk rock movement, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. Horses has also been cited as a key influence on a number of acts, including Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, R.E.M. and PJ Harvey.

1948 "Skunk" Baxter (guitarist for The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan) is born Jeffrey Allen Baxter in Washington, D.C.

2008 Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh marries Marjorie Bach, making him brother-in-law to Ringo Starr, who is married to Marjorie's sister Barbara.

1996: Jerry Maguire directed by Cameron Crowe opened in North American theaters. The film featured cameos from Glenn Frey of the Eagles & Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

2000: After former Democratic presidential hopeful Al Gore delivered his concession speech to George W. Bush in Washington, D.C., Gore held a party in his home with a performance by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which featured guest appearances by Jon Bon Jovi and Stevie Wonder.

2004, The funeral took place in Arlington, Texas for Damageplan and Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, placed Darrell’s original black and yellow stripes guitar into the KISS Kasket he was buried in. Several thousand fans and friends gathered at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, to mourn the guitarist’s death. Darrell was shot five times in the back of the head during a gig at the Alrosa Villa Club in Columbus on 8th Dec 04 by a mentally ill former US Marine. Damageplan's drum technician, John Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, were both injured in the incident.

2006, The co-founder of Atlantic Records Ahmet Ertegun died, aged 83. Ertegun who founded Atlantic Records with Herb Abramson in 1947 helped make Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin stars and signed The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin in the early 70s. He suffered a head injury when he fell at a Rolling Stones concert at New York's Beacon Theatre in October, and died after slipping into a coma.

1997 Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind 1997", was at its ninth week at number 1 on the Billboard chart. The song would go on to become the largest selling single of all time in the US and the UK, and sits second to Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" as the best selling record world-wide.

1949 Cliff Williams (bassist for AC/DC) is born in Romford, Essex, England.

1968 Motown acts hold the top three spots on the Hot 100:

1) "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye
2) "Love Child" by The Supremes
3) "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder

The chart stays the same the next week, and a week later Stevie and The Supremes trade positions.

1997 Kurt Winter (guitarist for The Guess Who) dies of kidney failure at age 51.

1999 In a much-publicized show, Paul McCartney returns to play the Cavern Club in Liverpool for the first time since 1963. Joining him are Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Deep Purple's Ian Paice.
