1939 Ginger Baker (drummer for Cream) is born Peter Edward Baker in Lewisham, South London, England.

1943 Rock 'n roller Billy J. Kramer (of Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas) is born William Howard Ashton in Bootle, Lancashire, England.

1945 Ian Gillian (lead singer for Deep Purple) is born in Chiswick, London, England.

1948 Elliot Lurie (lead guitarist, vocalist for Looking Glass) is born in Brooklyn, New York.

1951 John Deacon (bassist for Queen) is born in Oadby, Leicester, England.

1983 Having been sporadic since it was originally shut down in 1968, "pirate radio" station Radio Caroline makes its comeback on board the ship Ross Revenge in the North Sea's international waters. Six years to the day later, it would be shut down again.

2008 Saxophonist/arranger LeRoi Moore (of The Dave Matthews Band) dies after being injured in an ATV accident in Charlottesville, Virginia, at age 46.

2005, A life-size bronze statue designed by Paul Daly of Phil Lynott was unveiled on Harry Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by his former Thin Lizzy band members Gary Moore, Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham. Lynott died in 1986.

1974: Harry Nilsson released his tenth studio album, Pussy Cats. Produced by friend John Lennon during his “Lost Weekend” period, musicians on the album include Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Jim Keltner, Jesse Ed Davis, Klaus Voorman, and Bobby Keys. During recording sessions, Nilsson ruptured a vocal chord but forced himself through the sessions, which caused additional damage that some claimed he never recovered from. After the first night of recording, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder came to the studio unexpectedly. Bootleg recordings from this session were later released as A Toot and a Snore in ’74 and the incident is the last known instance of Lennon and McCartney recording together since the break-up of the Beatles.

1942 Soul superstar Isaac Hayes is born in Covington, Tennessee.

1947 Trombonist James Pankow (of Chicago) is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1948 Robert Plant is born in West Bromwich, West Midlands, England. Best known at Led Zeppelin's lead singer, he wins the Album of the Year Grammy for Raising Sand, his 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss.

1949 Bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy) is born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.

1966 Pantera guitarist Darrell Abbott, aka Dimebag Darrell, is born in Ennis, Texas.

1991 The movie Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man debuted in US theatres. The film featured a song called "The Bigger They Come" by Peter Frampton and Steve Marriott, which was their first work together since their days in Humble Pie, 20 years earlier.

1973 The Rolling Stones release "Angie", which will top the Billboard chart and reach #5 in the UK. At the time, the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition was rumored to have been written about David Bowie's first wife Angela, the actress Angie Dickinson, Keith Richards' newborn daughter Dandelion Angela, and Marianne Faithfull. However, in his 2010 memoir Life, Richards said that he had chosen the name at random when writing the song, before he knew that his baby would be named Angela or even knew that his baby would be a girl.
