1945, Born on this day, English guitarist and songwriter Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, who had the 1970 UK No.2 single 'Black Night' and the 1973 US No.4 single 'Smoke On The Water'. Deep Purple were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theater. Blackmore later formed Rainbow who had the 1981 hit single 'I Surrender'.

1967 - The Bee Gees released their first English single. It was "New York Mining Disaster 1941."

1980 - Iron Maiden's self-titled debut album was released.

1980 - Gary Numan released "The Touring Principle," a 45-minute concert video. It was the first commercially available home rock videocassette.

1972 Adam Duce, founding member and former bassist of Machine Head

1980 Judas Priest release “British Steel.” The group’s sixth album is the first to feature drummer Dave Holland and contains the track "Breaking The Law.”

2016 Prince plays what turns out to be his last show. It's at Atlanta's Fox Theater. He passes away a week later (4/21).

1964 Rock guitarist Vinnie Moore (of UFO) is born in New Castle, Delaware.

2005 John Fred Gourrier, who with John Fred and His Playboy Band had a #1 hit with "Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)," dies at age 63.

2009 Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Olivia Harrison and Dhani Harrison hit the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles to take part in the ceremony honoring George Harrison with his very own star in Hollywood.

1948 UFO front man Phil Mogg is born in Wood Green, London.

1966 The Rolling Stones release Aftermath.

1968 Alt-rock guitarist Ed O'Brien (of Radiohead) is born in Oxford, England.

1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases their second album, Second Helping.

1982 Anvil release their sophomore album, Metal on Metal. Produced by Chris Tsangarides, the album spawns the anthemic title track, which instantly becomes an Anvil concert standard.

1947, Born on this day, Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty who with Stealers Wheel had the 1973 US No.3 & UK No.8 single 'Stuck In The Middle With You'. The song was used in Quentin Tarantino's 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs, during the famous "ear" scene. He is best known for his 1978 solo hit the UK No.3 and US No.2 single 'Baker Street.' He was also a member of late 1960s group The Humblebums with Billy Connolly. Rafferty died on 4th Jan 2011 at the age of 63 after suffering a long illness.


1956, Buddy Holly's first single 'Blue Days, Black Nights', was released. The track was later featured on That'll Be The Day the third album from Buddy Holly. Decca, Holly’s first major record label, after failing to produce a hit single from Holly’s early recordings, packaged these 1956 tunes after he had some success with recordings from the Brunswick and Coral labels.

1999, Skip Spence, an original member of Jefferson Airplane and founding member of Moby Grape, died of lung cancer in a San Francisco hospital aged 52. He had battled schizophrenia and alcoholism.
