This Day In Rock History: December 4th

1967, This was the penultimate night of a 16-date UK package tour played at City Hall, Newcastle-Upon-Tyneon. Pink Floyd joined The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Move, The Nice, The Eire Apparent, The Outer Limits and Amen Corner. Hendrix was having equipment problems, and in his frustration rammed his Gibson Flying V into his speaker cabinets. Like an enormous arrow, the guitar became stuck in the amplifier, which the audience greeted as all was part of the act.

1964 The Zombies' debut single "She's Not There" tops the Cashbox Best Sellers chart. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 in the UK. Rolling Stone magazine would later place the song at #297 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

2021 The Billboard 200 year-end album chart showed no new Rock records for 2021. The only Rock LPs to crack the list were "Queen's Greatest Hits", Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", "Journey's Greatest Hits", AC/DC's "Back in Black", Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Metallica's "Black Album".

1968: The Rolling Stones threw a launch party for their newest album, Beggars Banquet, in the Elizabethan Room at the Gore Hotel in Kensington, London. Record executives and the band’s journalist and television friends were among those invited to banquet, which ended with a food fight with custard pies. The following day, the album was release in the US by London Records. A return to roots rock compared to the band’s previous LP, the psychedelic Their Satanic Majesties Request, it was the last Stones album released during founding member Brian Jones’ lifetime.

2021 The Rolling Stones, including their former bassist Bill Wyman, got together at the tiny London club Ronnie Scott's to honor their late drummer Charlie Watts with a special tribute show. The event, hosted by Charlie's granddaughter Charlotte and others members of the Watts family, was limited to about two hundred people and attendees were strongly discouraged from taking photos or video.
