What songs have been overplayed on FM radio stations?

Here are some that were when they were first released, and mostly still are today, imo.

Mississippi Queen - Mountain

Barracuda; Magic Man - Heart

Highway Song; Train Train - Blackfoot

Free Bird; Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Smoke on The Water; Highway Star - Deep Purple

Boom Boom (Out go The Lights); Snortin' Whiskey, Drinkin' Cocaine - Pat Travers

Iron Man; War Pigs - Black Sabbath

(Don't Fear) The Reaper; Godzilla - BOC

Renegade; Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) - Styx

Time; Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

Love Stinks; Freeze Frame - J Geils Band

I Can't Drive 55; Three Lock Box - Sammy Hagar

Many of these songs are excellent, and also long times favorites, but it becomes pretty difficult to not get burned out with hearing these songs many times over and over a period of many years, too.

Here's an anomaly..."The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace. When that song was released the FM stations in Vancouver played it to death...for about 3 months, then it faded into the void, thankfully.

I love AC/DC, but you can't listen to Aussie radio without hearing "Long Way to the Top" or "TNT".

Hotel California is one song I haven't heard mentioned that gets played every day.

If I don't hear it on the radio, I hear it on the in-store music playlist at my work.

Coming from a guy who did radio and still has a few connections at rock stations.

I think we all know the usual suspects. These same songs, and little else, will still be on FM rock radio en masse 10-15 years from now. Just as these same songs were all over the radio en masse 10-15 years ago today.

A lot of people evidently still listen to them on these stations because they are still getting played. Radio wouldn't be playing this stuff if the ratings were falling off a cliff. I've been told that in person by more than one program director, station manager and/or radio dj whose hands are pretty much tied as to what they can play on the air.
