While The Outlaws were not really part of the Georgia Rhythm sound, they were definitely part of the southern rock genre. Many people considered the band a second rate version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, which is light years from reality as the two bands had little in common other than their 3 Guitarist (sometimes 2) format. Hughie Thomasson was nicknamed 'The Flame' because he was an exceptionally fast chicken picker, more along the lines of many country guitarists. His partner in crime was Billy Jones (a mathematician), and he could have replaced any guy on the southern rock circuit holding a Les Paul then or now because none of these guys got to be where they were at in the music industry by being 2nd rate. But that's my opinion. Meanwhile, here's the greatest southern rock opus ever written.

From UCR....Ultimate Classic Rock.....

As much as I hate to be a purist, a know-it-all, and a disagreeable old guy, this post lost me with the inclusion of Hank Williams Junior. For the record, he's a country singer. Then they added the Black Crowes and ZZ Top, and I clicked it off.

According to Billy Gibbons: "We never considered ourselves a 'Southern Rock band'. We just happened to be from Texas. We played bluesy rock and roll."

Little Feat was a band from California. Ram Jam was from New York City, and the Black Crowes were still wearing diapers during the Classic period of Southern Rock. 70's-80's

Kings of Leon? Drive By Trucker? Really!

Apparently, the person who made this list did no research whatsoever on the 'Southern Rock' genre of the 70's & 80's, tossed in a whole lot of songs (mostly the Allman Brothers) that they liked and called it good. If they were working for me I'd have fired them for failing to do any basic research.

Meanwhile, they included nothing from Molly Hatchet, Grinder Switch, Black Oak Arkansas, ARS, Sea Level, The Henry Paul Band, or even the Charlie Daniels Band

But this vid did remind me of the time I saw Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress included in a "BEST OF SOUTHERN ROCK" video playlist on YouTube. Which really got me to laugh because The Hollies were a 60's pop band from England that were still kicking around in the 70's. I made sure to include this information in the comment section, and at leas two people informed me that the song 'Fit The Southern Rock Sound'. I nearly died of laughter.

But (again) at least this vid didn't include CCR, Pure Prairie League, Poco, Firefall, and The Eagles! So there is that.

An unusual list to be sure, but then.......maybe you are a disagreeable old Canadian guy.

For the record, I was born in Rats Angeles while my parents were on vacation. And I lived in Southern California from 6 to 26 (and from about 28-30), But, yes, I'm a disagreeable old guy. Find one of us who isn't.

Meanwhile, that's more than an 'unusual' list. That's a poorly researched Musical Op Ed.
