Man, tried to think of a Top 10 songs for Steppenwolf. Such a great band, it was hard to pick 10, so I made it a dozen, then a baker's dozen, then excluded ''Born To Be Wild'', ''Magic Carpet Ride'' and ''The Pusher'' because they're a given...

So, here's my baker's dozen of favorite Steppenwolf songs...

Sookie Sookie
A Girl I Knew
Jupiter's Child
Foggy Mental Breakdown
It's Never Too Late
Ride With Me
The Ostrich
Renegade
Draft Resister
Desperation
Move Over
None of Your Doing
Don't Step on the Grass, Sam

So, What's your Top 10 or dozen Steppenwolf songs?

I was hoping someone would choose The Wall from Rise and Shine, to be perfectly honest.

The reviews are pretty good on this LP aeroplane.. I've never heard it and it's available through amazon.. They say it's as good as seven so that would be my top favorite Steppenwolf so I'll have to order it.. Thanks for bringing it up..

The Wall is a song detailing the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was recorded right around the time that it happened in Germany. Apparently it was an autobiographical song for John Kay, if you listen to the lyrics.

Most of the other songs are reasonably good, and many of them ended up on more recent Wolf live albums from the 90's/2000's (they sell a number of them on their web site).

As for whether it stands up to earlier material, I won't make that claim one way or the other. I like the album. Give it a listen, it is what it is.

1-Born To Be Wild

2-Magic Carpet Ride

3-The Pusher

4-Rock Me

5-Snowblind Friend

6-Who Needs Ya -think about it baby!

7-Earscplittinloudenboomer

8-Nobody Lives Here
9-My Sportin Life
10 Sing With The Children

honorary mention
11 Straight Shootin Woman
12 Fishin In The Dark
13 For Ladies Only

I had to get one in featuring my
old buddy Kent Henry...so #13 Does that

tracks 8-10 are from the John Kay solo album
"My Sportin Life" however Richie Podolor produced
and Kent Henry also played..so to me thats as much
steppenwolf as most steppenwolf albums..

I also like Watch Your innocence from Paradox, but
thats the Mike wilk back up band...and I can do without
them..too jazzy

ok roger and out

"I fried in the sun just outside San Bernadino
flagged me a ride in a rattletrap ford
Rollin back east to the northern border
I'm back in town to find my favorite folk

John Kay 1973 NOBODY LIVES HERE

Yikes, I lost track of this one.

Um, the ten I like the best at the moment are (in no particular order):

-Magic Carpet Ride
-Born to be Wild
-Give Me News I Can Use
-The Wall
-Hold Your Head Up
-Replace the Face
-Man on a Mission
-The Pusher
-Bad Attitude
-Rock N Roll Rebels

I listed a little too much later day work but I contacted Steppenwolf (or their management) by email one year to get ahold of John Kay's solo album, Heretics and Privateers for my radio station.

They proceeded (without me asking) to send me the double cd anthology from the 1990's and a couple later day studio albums in addition to John's solo record.

It was pretty frigging sweet and I used the studio albums a lot.
