Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James

June 9, 1902 / October 3, 1969

The only known photograph of James in his youth.

His guitar playing is noted for its dark, minor sound, played in an open D-minor tuning with an intricate finger picking technique.

The combination of James' lonely vocals and his mastery of the dark side of the acoustical guitar make for some heavy blues. These tunes are why they call it the Blues.

I think it's pretty cool that he virtually dropped out of the musical scene for 30 years and then showed up in the early 60's at the Newport Folk Festival.
