Heaven and Hell singer Ronnie James Dio would still be alive today if he'd had a medical check-up while his bandmates had theirs, says friend and bandmate Geezer Butler.

Dio died of cancer in May last year after a six-month battle against the disease. But Butler says the frontman had stage-four stomach cancer by the time it was discovered – and it was already too late for him.

The bassist tells Noisecreep: “By the time Ronnie was diagnosed it was inoperable. The doctor hinted it was just a matter of time and there was nothing they could do. They said if he’d gone in for a check-up a year or two earlier they could have treated him.”

Tragically, Dio’s three colleagues had all had their own routine colonoscopies around the critical time – and the band even discussed the topic in rehearsals.Butler says: “Vinny Appice had just done it and he couldn’t sit down on his drum stool. I was making arrangements to have it done. But Ronnie was going, ‘Oh, I’m never going to have anything like that.’“If he’d gone in at the same time as everyone else they’d have caught it before the tour. All the doctors said if it had been stage-one cancer they could have dealt with it.“If he’d had regular check-ups… it’s really upsetting to think about that. But hopefully it will encourage people who need a check-up to get it done.”

That is almost a premonition of what was to come.

My Dad who is 81 now has to get one every year, and has since his cancer surgery over 25 years ago now, he looks Awful when I pick him up after and takes two days to get over it. But there is no alternative, and it does catch cancer in it's early stages.

I am absolutely terrified of doctors and their chamber of horrors, having had a few procedures done myself over the years, so I understand Ronnie's predicament. I have not decided what I will do as I get older, try to stay on top of things or just let nature take it's course. That is a decision only you can make for yourself.

I also agree with the "not knowing if im sick" thing. If I don't know i'm sick, I can still enjoy life until it actually starts to affect me. If I found out I was sick, I wouldn't be inclined to enjoy life as much.

I can't say I blame Ronnie. I mean it's even sadder in light of this but I can't honestly say I would've done things differently from him.

While what Butler is saying is true, personally this is a matter that he should have kept quiet about. At least in my opinion.

I mean I have kids...I should get check ups more often than I do...but I think I'm also in that percentage of people who do NOT want to know. But as far as Ronnie goes...yeah it's a sad and trippy thought that he could have beaten it or at best be around a little while longer.

I would totally want to know if something was wrong with me. Being aware of a sickness then enables you to make the necessary adjustments to your lifestyle and time to discover various treatments to pursue. To me, ignorance is NOT bliss, awareness is bliss. Too bad Ronnie thought that "it can't happen to me," but that was his own personal choice. Never take anything for granted I guess!

If I had kids like MP then I would do whatever was necessary to be there for them as long as possible.

But I have decided that if I do ever get a serious illness like cancer, then I am just going to get pain medication and ride it out, I will not go through Chemotherapy/Radiation treatments. I will live everyday to the fullest and have no regrets.
