I remember a friend in high school who was interested in playing guitar. Before summer break he could barely keep anything together. After the summer he was very good at riffs and scales though still couldn't play rythm very well. I think the step from not guitar player to guitar player is sometimes very dramatic and have seen it with my own eyes.
I think Robert Johnson may have had a more than usual ascendance from someone who wanted to someone who could play and it amazed his contemporaries. Or was there really something there at the crossroads?
