Re: Queen ~ February 2010 Band of the Month

i'm gonna hafta give some of that stuff another shot. it's been awhile since i've listened to the later albums all the way through. a few years ago, i played hop-skip-jump to make a few queen comps for the road, but it was a piecemeal deal. lately, i've been finding that many albums i really didn't care for upon release have sounded much better on re-listen today. i don't know if there's any real generalization to be made there (no, i don't think all music today is crap by comparison... no, i don't think my standards have sunk any lower than they already were, mwhaha... etc)... and it certainly isn't the case with everything i re-listen to. but i need to give it a shot.

you've probably talked about this elsewhere (gee, kath, maybe ya oughtta read the whole thread, or... god forbid... search).... but what do ya think about brian may's solo albums, or the paul rodgers + queen stuff?

Well somethings just need to grow on you sometimes. If you want to revisit Queen albums then I'd start with "Innuendo" (my favorite) and "Made In Heaven" whereas of 80's work I'd go with "The Works" and "The Miracle" (the latter being very underrated I feel).

No we haven't actually talked about Brian May's solo work or Paul Rogers yet. Personally I actually enjoy Brian May's solo work more than Freddie even though his gained much more attention. As for their period with Paul Rodgers.....I'm not really a fan. It's not that Paul is a bad singer it's just that I don't think he has the right voice to front Queen.

Just a random question: Does anyone else think that with the all star line up of bands and musicians brought together for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert it was a poor choice for Liza Minelli to sing "We Are The Champions" to close the concert?

well, i would agree with you. i hate to deny anyone a chance to pay tribute to freddie, it's true. and i think the choice of liza was playing to a certain audience. but... really, now.

let us play speculate-for-the-helluvit, shall we?

    who *should've* gotten the job?

Now that is a very good question....I'm not sure who but I'm willing to bet that there are a WHOLE lot of people who would've done way better than Liza.

I MAY be a bit biased but I think Meat Loaf could've sung "We Are The Champions" well. He was friends with Freddie and Brian after all. His career was just sort of in the pooper at the time of the concert. Though still I don't believe Meat Loaf would be a big enough act to close the concert.

Liza Minnelli? She was never any good in the first place and now she's posituvely ancient. To which audience were the organizers trying to appeal? Those in wheelchairs - who even decades ago never liked to rock?

    :wtf:

So the organizers are tossing in the towel on Queen retaining any mass market appeal and thus ghettoizing the band? I'm surprised you haven't decided to riot about your favourite band being marginalized like that.

Yes well I am the one who brought up Liza closing that concert because I was displeased with it. I mean, it's not as though anyone went "Oh hell no! Liza Minnelli?! I'm no watching the concert because of her.". It raised millions for AIDS research (not that I believe Liza had anything to do with that) so I'd say it's all ok.

I wouldn't ever say that Queen has lost mass market appeal. If anything has become apparent over the last 20 years it's that Queen's legacy has been cemented forever.

this is a great answer. i would've never thought of him, but he could've pulled it off, truly.

i must ponder the issue further. as usual, i posted the question before i actually did any speculating my own self. c'est la fucquin vie.
